Through their "Pay it Forward" initiative, members of Theta Delta Lambda helped families with their grocery purchases Monday to honor Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.

The fraternity purchased $3,500 worth of groceries for 70 families at the Walmart at 5631 Dyer.

“During these difficult times for families, we hope to continue to let our light shine,” the fraternity said in a statement.

Theta Delta Lambda was chartered in 1962 and is a chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the oldest intercollegiate fraternity established for African Americans. Among its members was Martin Luther King Jr., the civil rights leader.

Over the past three years, this event has empowered hundreds of young women to embrace leadership, resilience, and community impact—and this year was no exception. The owners of Jungle Reef say they have made improvements. “When we opened, we were this brand-new business that brought tons of crowds,” said Jon Hepworth, who met with El Paso Inc. at the aquarium. “There were plenty of mistakes on our end, but we asked for patience from El Paso to get better and I feel like we’ve done that.”
