"The rodeo world has lost a true legend with the passing of Mel Potter. His Hall of Fame legacy and PRCA Legend status only begin to tell the story of a man who shaped the sport through both the incredible Potter Ranch breeding program and his genuine kindness to everyone he met. His spirit will live on through the countless lives he touched, including his daughter Sherry Cervi's remarkable achievements in barrel racing.
While we mourn this profound loss, we celebrate a life so beautifully lived and a legacy that will continue to influence the western way of life for generations to come. My deepest sympathies go out to Sherry, the entire Potter family, and all who were blessed to know him.
May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him, and may the values he embodied - excellence, generosity, and dedication to the western heritage - continue to inspire us all."
81 years ago, a nine year-old, Wisconsin born, son of a cranberry farmer went and saw his first rodeo in Tucson, Arizona. He instantly fell in love with the sport. Mel Potter would go on to become a Hall of Fame cowboy, and winner of the PRCA’s Legend award. This morning, Mel peacefully passed over to the other side, in his home surrounded by family and loved ones. We may never know all of the countless lives Mel touched, but his legacy of kindness, cranberries, and fast horses will never be forgotten.
Services for Mel will be held Thursday, February 27th at11am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (13555 N. Lon Adams Rd, Marana, AZ). All are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund.
