Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead Wednesday afternoon in their Santa Fe home.
One of the great screen performers of the 20th century, Hackman had an amiable grace, easy humor and wide range that made him equally believable in roles as lower-class losers and high-powered executives. He was nominated for an Oscar five times and won twice, both times for playing wicked officers of the law: Popeye Doyle in William Friedkin's "The French Connection" and Little Bill Dagget in Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven."
