Hopkins City Council officially declared a vacancy on the council at its Aug. 5 meeting following the official resignation of Council Member Gerard Balan.

Because less than two years remain in his seat’s term, no special election is required and council instead will decide what to do with the empty seat. The majority of council were interested in asking former Council Member Aaron Kuznia to fill the seat.

After retiring from pro ball, Paul Voelker played one year with the St. Paul Saints, an independent team at the time. Meanwhile, he completed his college degree online, graduating in December of 2020.

Still wanting to play baseball, he waited until 2022 to join the Minnetonka Millers town team - the same team he had played with right out of high school at age 18.

Paul Voelker’s first season of high school baseball with Wayzata coincided with the arrival of new set of uniforms.

Erin Aulik was a cheerleader and a dancer during her high school years, but she wasn’t really into competitive sports.

A teacher for the last 18 years, she waited until her late 30s to become a competitive athlete, but now that she is, there is no stopping her.

Aulik first discovered body building at the age of 37 two years ago. At 39, she is a rising star in the sport and has turned pro.

Eden Prairie roared into the State Tournament Aug. 1-4 with a 28-6 overall record. Unfortunate circumstances stopped the Eagles short of the state title. The Sun Sailor reached out to the candidates leading up to the Aug. 13 DFL primary election, which will determine whether Kissy Coakley of Minnetonka or DFL-endorsed candidate Alex Falconer will go on to face Republican candidate Stacy Bettison in the Nov. 5 general election.
The primary election is Tuesday, Aug. 13.

There are three candidates in the running for the District 49A seat this election, all hoping to be the one who will replace Rep. Laurie Pryor (DFL).

Daniel Perelstein's love of teaching was recently recognized by pop icon Barry Manilow.

Barry Manilow’s goodbye tour included an Aug. 2 stop at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, where he honored Perelstein, a Lakeville man and music teacher at Washington Technology Magnet High School in St. Paul, with $10,000. The honored educator was given $5,000 for his school and $5,000 for himself.

Perelstein grew up in Golden Valley and graduated from Hopkins High School.

The end of Excelsior’s American Legion baseball season July 27 was bitter-sweet for three of the star players - Will Koeppen, Max Nelson and Nate Wheeler.

The Fire Club had one of its best records in recent years with a 26-7 mark, however, the last day of the season didn’t go well as Excelsior lost to Eden Prairie twice, 7-4 and 2-0. Since only one team from the Sub-State 4 Tournament moved on to state, Excelsior put the gear away for another season.

With the rise of pickleball across the nation, the construction of courts in Wayzata is complete with the help of the Parks and Trails Board. The Tour de Tonka bike ride brought over 2,600 riders together for community fun. Riders signed up for a variety of distances between 16 and 100 miles, and proceeds went toward Minnetonka Community Ed and the ICA Food Shelf. Routes stretched through the cities of Minnetonka, Chanhassen, Chaska, Wayzata and more.

Not long after he learned to walk, Parker Hlavacek was at the park watching his father Brad play slowpitch softball.

While he was a three-sport athlete at Wayzata High in football, basketball and baseball, Parker found time to play slowpitch in the summer at Edina’s Van Valkenburg Park. He played alongside his dad for Edina Hall-of-Fame pitcher Alex Karos.

With Karos retiring and moving to Florida after the 2022 season, Parker took over as captain of the Yamaha Golf & Utility team in Edina’s Thursday Night League.
