A mixture of philanthropy and cookies provides a lifesaving service for medically needy people in Washington County who require specialized healthcare. The philanthropy comes from an organization called SkyHope and the pilots who donate their aircraft, skills, time and fuel money to ferry patients to far‑flung hospitals and doctors' offices. Their generosity is often lifesaving for the patients who take advantage of this free service.

Replacing what is currently a failing d**e in Machias with a nearly duplicate span drew considerable support from concerned residents during a meeting on November 3 to discuss how to deal with the 140‑year‑old structure. And that was the point of the meeting – to get ideas and build consensus on how to deal with the d**e that transports Route 1 traffic over the Middle River. It's the latest move in a nearly two-decade-long struggle to get the d**e replaced.

More than 140 workers are being temporarily laid off in an unexpected 26-day shutdown of the Woodland Pulp mill because of low softwood pulp prices. In addition, wood deliveries to the mill are being paused for approximately a 60-day period that began on October 31. The pulp mill usually receives between 120 and 140 truckload-equivalents of wood a day.

With Washington County voters rejecting the proposed $11 million county bond question by a margin of 53% to 47% in the November 4 election, county officials are struggling to figure out how to pay the current tax anticipation note (TAN), due December 31, without defaulting on it, which would ruin the county's credit rating.

The launch of the audiobook for the Sea Run report, which collects and assesses the access of traditional food sources to Indigenous people in Maine, was celebrated on October 13 at the Veazie Salmon Club, where the now‑demolished Veazie Dam once blocked access on the Penobscot River to sea‑run fish.

A Vietnam veteran from Eastport who courageously risked his own life to save others in a fierce firefight will be honored next year with recognition that he did not receive during his lifetime. Those efforts to honor Thomas Bouchard's actions during the war are being led by a son that he never knew he had. On this Veterans Day, the bravery and self-sacrifice of Bouchard and all veterans will be remembered. His son, Barry Tishler, is doing his part by having Bouchard honored with a final resting place in Arlington National Cemetery, recovering his medals that were long thought lost and founding a recovery house for veterans facing PTSD, trauma and substance use challenges.

Maine voters will consider two statewide referendum questions at the November 4 polls. Question 1 would alter the laws governing absentee voting and voter ID requirements, among other changes, and Question 2 would enact Maine's Extreme Risk Protection Order law, which would be used to remove weapons and protect individuals and the public, often known as the "red flag" law. The Secretary of State issues the Maine Citizen's Guide to the 2025 Referendum Election, which is available online at the site.
