Salmon and seafood take center stage on Eastport dinner plates as a special culinary festival celebrates the bounty of the ocean off the Downeast coast on Labor Day weekend. This year, the 37th year the city hosts the Eastport Salmon and Seafood Festival, features an expanded repertoire of regional foods. In addition to the crab rolls and grilled salmon traditionally offered, festival organizers also plan to plate up freshly shucked Maine oysters, Maine wild blueberry cake and Maine smoked salmon.

While Lubec residents earlier this month narrowly adopted a local aquaculture ordinance in response to two salmon farm lease renewal requests, whether the ordinance will be legally binding and whether the town has the capacity to administer it are questions that have not yet been determined. Voters approved the ordinance 94 to 81 at the August 6 annual town meeting that drew a large crowd. The close vote may be partly reflective of changing demographics in the Quoddy area, which for decades has been fairly accepting of fish farming.

Filled with thrills and spills, Jaws opened 50 years ago in cinemas, changing the world's view of sharks and instilling a fear in people of going swimming in the ocean. The movie had a significant negative impact on the public perception of sharks and on their population, as shark killing soared globally. However, over time the movie also led to shark conservation efforts and to a greater understanding of the role they play in the marine environment.

With great white sharks being increasingly in the news along the East Coast, the Quoddy region is contributing to the uptick with the first Passamaquoddy White Shark Week, a volunteer survey of the waters to observe large sharks in the area. The survey is part of an effort to see whether white sharks are mating and breeding in the Passamaquoddy Bay region. Observing such behavior has long been considered by some as the "holy grail" of white shark ecological research.

Plans for a new health center in Eastport are still moving forward, although they have been delayed, in part because of funding issues caused by federal Medicaid cuts. The proposal to relocate Eastport Health Care (EHC) from its current Boynton Street facility to a new site at the corner of Key Street and County Road had been announced in February 2024, with the possibility of the new building being completed this year. The health center purchased the 2.8-acre vacant lot that adjoins the R&M IGA parking lot in January of that year. EHC had decided to make the move because of space restrictions at its current location and an increasing patient need. The new facility could be more than double the size of the present health center.
