The US criminal legal system can never be “just.”

From arrest to sentencing, racial and ethnic disparities are a defining characteristic of our criminal legal system. Black people, in particular, are disproportionately likely to be incarcerated and to receive the harshest sentences, including life without parole and death sentences. Despite efforts to address these disparities, Black people continue to be incarcerated at an alarming rate compared to white people.
