Relationship Rewind
Tuesday, September 17th, 4:30-– 5:00

Relationship Rewind is about rewinding relationships in popular media and breaking down behaviors that are often normalized but are actually based in power, control, and abuse. In September we will be discussing the film “Priscilla.”

“Priscilla” is based on the 1985 autobiography “Elvis and Me.” The 2023 biopic recounts Priscilla Beaulieu's transformation into Mrs. Presley, examining their relationship through the eyes of a young girl trying to make sense of this "king" figure as well as herself.

Relationship Rewind airs on WEREU Community Radio on the third Tuesday of the month, 4:30 - 5:00. Find us on the radio dial at 89.9 FM, streaming on weru.org, and on the WERU App.

Co-Hosts Clair Boland and Holli Cederholm
“Seeds of Change: Breaking Free from the Prison Food Machine”
Thursday, September 12, 4:00 – 5:00

“Seeds of Change: Breaking Free from the Prison Food Machine” is an award-winning documentary film. Filmed over the course of two years, “Seeds of Change” chronicles the intersecting stories of lifelong farmer Mark McBrine and several incarcerated men as they grow their own food on a five-acre prison garden unlike any other. In a place where life is routinely defined by shame and despair, good food can be a gateway to meaning, wellness, and dignity. This is a story about the power of using organic agriculture as a means to reform our food systems and change the course of people’s lives.

In the September’s Common Ground Radio, we'll talk with Mark McBrine, who in addition to being a farmer, is Director of Food Service at Mountain View Correctional Facility in Charleston, Maine. Mountain View’s food service program is based on from-scratch cooking using many Maine-sourced ingredients, including the food grown by residents onsite in that 5-acre prison garden. These initiatives have led to significant cost savings at Mountain View and include vocational training apprenticeships for residents. The food program has become a model for other correctional facilities in Maine and elsewhere.

Common Ground Radio is brought to you by the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, in conjunction with WERU Community Radio, and can be heard the second Thursday of every month, 4:00 – 5:00. Listen at 89.9 on the radio dial, streaming at weru.org, or on the WERU App.

"Lifelong Learning Starts Before Kindergarten"
Talk of the Towns with Co-Hosts Ron Beard and Liz Graves
Wednesday, September 11th, 4:00 – 5:00

The new school year is here, but lifelong learning starts long before that first day of kindergarten. Our state and region boast a wealth of programs to provide support for families with young children. What are programs for early childhood education designed to accomplish? How well are they working? And how do families with young children find out more about what is available in their community?

On WERU’s Talk of the Towns co-hosts Ron Beard and Liz Graves will be finding out the answers to these questions and more, as they speak with Naomi McIsaac, Director of Early Childhood Programs at Downeast Community Partners and Ana Hicks, Policy Director, Human Services at the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future.

Make a note to tune in to Talk of the Towns, Wednesday afternoon, September 11, 4:00 – 5:00, for a conversation about early childhood education in eastern Maine. Only on WERU Community Radio, 89.9 FM in Blue Hill, streaming all over our big blue and green planet at weru.org, and on the WERU App.

Talk of the Towns airs on the second Wednesday of the month, 4:00 – 5:00. Previous shows in the WERU Archives at https://archives.weru.org/category/talk-of-the-towns/.

Only on WERU Community Radio, 89.9 FM on the radio dial, and all over our intelligent planet, streaming on weru.org, and the WERU App.

Healthy Options
The Importance of a Local Hospital to the Community
Wednesday, September 4th, 2024
4:00 – 5:00

Why is the local hospital important to a community? What are the adverse impacts of the downsizing of healthcare facilities?

Healthy Options' host Rhonda Feiman speaks with Mike Towey, former Director of the Speech Language Pathology Department at Waldo County General Hospital. How have things changed for Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast, Maine, now that they have been consolidated under the non-profit MaineHealth.

Of course, the change was controversial. What changes have been implemented? What is working better? What has the community lost? Are there the financial savings promised? Are patients getting better care?

Healthy Options airs on the first Wednesday of the month, 4:00 – 5:00 on WERU. Listen at 89.9 FM on the radio dial, streaming at weru.org, and on the WERU App, https://weru.org/new-weru-smartphone-app/.
