When you listen the word “coach”, what comes first into your mind? Do you image a basketball team with a man/woman shouting out directions? Or maybe a football team with a man/woman pacing to and fro and calling out the names of the players?
Coaching is no longer exclusive to sports teams; it is now one of the key concepts in leadership and management. Why is coaching popular?
Coaching Levels The Playing Field
Coaching is a style of leadership. Moreover, it is a routine or role that leaders implement to get desired results. As a leadership style, coaching is used when the members of a group or team are competent and motivated, but don't have a a clear understanding of the long-term goals of an association or business. This involves two levels of coaching: Team and Individual Coaching.
Team coaching involves members working together. In a group of individuals, not everyone may have nor share the same level of competence and commitment necessary for growth. A group might be a mix of very efficient and educated members with varying levels of commitment. These differences can cause friction between the members. The coaching leader helps the team commit to realistic expectations. additionally, the coaching leader must adapt to the different learning & communication styles of the team. In a large organization, leaders must align their teams’ personal values and goals with that of the organization, in order to ensure long-term, continuous success.
Coaching Builds Confidence and Competence
Individual coaching is an example of situational leadership at work. It aims to mentor one-on-one, building up the confidence of Team Members by affirming good performance by opening up communication for regular feedback and to boost competence by assisting each team member assess his/her strengths and weaknesses in order to grow professionally. Depending on the individual’s level of competence and commitment, a leader may exercise more training for the less-experienced members. This is a common occurrence for on-boarding new employees. Proper employee training will save you a lot of money in the long run, making an easier transition into their new position. Coaching promotes individual and team excellence.
Mastery is a product of repetition, the mother of all skills, with efficient training. The regularity of meetings and constructive feedback is essential in initiating positive habits. Members capture the routine of continually assessing themselves for their strengths and areas for improvement that they themselves perceive what capabilities, and attitudes they require to attain team goals. The only way to truly know which areas need attention, is by measuring everything. Imagine your team is a musical orchestra: each member plays a different instrument. In order to perform a harmony of music from each different instrument, members have to fine tune their part in the piece, apart from practicing as an ensemble. Consequently, they improve one by one as an instrument player.
Coaching Develops High Commitment
A coaching leader balances short term goals with long-term goals. All leading towards the outcome or vision of the association. As mentioned already, aligning your personal goals with the organizations or team goals, will help keep personal interests in check. Use formal and informal conversations to keep , your team inspired and motivated. Everyone should be on the same page, moving towards the ultimate outcome.
Coaching Produces More Leaders
Leadership by example is essential in coaching. A coaching leader loses credibility when he/she can't practice what he/she preaches. This signifies that a coaching leader should be well organized, very competent is his/her ground, communicates openly and puts the stress on feedback, and has an understandable idea of the organization’s vision-mission-goals. By vicarious and immersive learning, members emulate the same practices and attitudes from the coaching leader, turning them into coaching leaders themselves. If a member experiences good coaching, he/she is most likely to perform the same things when entrusted with formal leadership roles.
Some words of caution although: coaching is just one of the styles of leadership. It can be completed in unification with the other 5 emotional leadership styles depending on the profile of the emerging team. Moreover, coaching as a leadership style needs that you are physically, emotionally, and mentally fit most of the time since it contains two levels of coaching: individual and team. Your members expect you to be the last one to quit or bail out in any situation specifically during times of crises. A coaching leader must be conscious that coaching entails spending time on each individual, and on the whole team. Knowing that you are creating future leaders, it is the coaches obligation to reach out to each member of the team to get them on the same track as the company.
