Winter Weather Advisory in effect for parts of the Tri-Cities for 3 to 5 inches of snowfall tonight through tomorrow morning. 1 to 3 inches of snowfall can be expected at most other locations. Brief lull in higher snow rates after 8 am before lake effect showers develop bringing additional accumulation potential of 1 to 2 inches during the late morning and afternoon hours, especially across the northern/eastern Thumb tomorrow afternoon. Temperatures turn much colder tomorrow night and Saturday as snow potential across the Thumb ends.

12/19/2024

Widespread accumulating snow tonight into Friday. Total accumulation 1 to 3 inches through Friday night, with locally 4" or greater possible across portions of the thumb.

FEET more snow possible for those lake effect snow belts through Friday morning!

Remember, lake effect is very localized. The north side vs south side of the same city can vary 6-10" sometimes.

TIMING: Snow will continue to develop overnight into Wednesday for the northern part of the state and not start really piling up for the southern areas until later Wednesday. By Wednesday evening, the lake effect snow machine will be on full tilt as very cold air pours over record and near-record warm Great Lakes waters. This continues all day Thursday with southern areas wrapping up late Thursday night and northern areas wrapping up Friday morning.

VISIBILITY: This will get more and more fluffy as we get deeper into the event with colder temperatures prevailing. This means the snow will blow around in our high wind gusts and cause dangerous driving conditions with whiteouts at times. Pockets of reduced visibility turn into scattered areas of poor visibility by Wednesday afternoon and evening. This lasts through Thursday as well.

TEMPS: Wednesday the U.P. will be in the 20s with most of the Lower Peninsula being around the freezing mark. By midnight Thursday morning, the U.P. could be as cold as 5-10 degrees in the eastern part and -5 degrees in the western part. The Lower Peninsula will have temps tumble to the 10s as well. Thursday morning the U.P. will be the same 5-10 degrees in the east and as cold as -5 in the west. The Lower Peninsula will fall into the single digits by Thursday morning as well. Everyone will eventually warm into the 10s Thursday afternoon.

WINDS: Wednesday the western U.P., West Michigan, Mid-Michigan, and Southeast Michigan will have WNW winds 10-20 mph. Eastern U.P. and Northern Lower will be less, maybe only 5-10mph. Thursday winds could be sustained near 20mph for many of us from the NW and W through the day. Lakeshore areas could be sustained near 30mph! Gusts will likely be as high as 40-45mph through the day.

WIND CHILL: 10s and 20s most of Wednesday. Thursday morning will be as cold as -30 in the western U.P. with widespread -10 to -20 across the rest of the state. Some areas might not see wind chill values above zero until Friday. BUNDLE UP AND BE SAFE.

ROADS: Roads will be melting some snow until they can't. I am feeling very "Christmas 2022" about this. I think we melt, they get wet, then they freeze so there is a sheet of ice under the blowing snow. It might be too cold for salt treatments to be effective. I would work from home if possible Thursday. I am going to assume we will have a slew of school closings as well.

Please ask any questions you have and I will try my best to respond.

- Gusty winds Wednesday & Thursday -

Winds will pick up after 4:00am on Wednsday morning with SW winds sustained at 15-20mph, gusting to 30mph across the UP & and 40-45 mph across the lower peninsula.

Wednesday afternoon, winds will shift from SW to NW behind the cold front. The cold front will start to move into the UP around noon before moving across the state. NW winds sustained at 15-25mph gusting to 40 mph will be likely statewide Wednesday evening into Thursday. Wind gusts over 50mph are possible along and near shores of Lake Michigan and Superior.

The combination of strong winds and cold temperatures will make wind chills values as low as -10°F across the state.

In addition, we are expecting snow at this same time, so we do expected whiteout and perhaps near blizzard like conditions to develop in the heaviest snow showers.

Widespread power outages are not expected. However, scattered power outages are possible through Thursday.

12/03/2024

A strong arctic front will bring a potential of hazardous travel conditions from early Wednesday evening through Thursday. Rain and snow showers will transition to mainly lake effect snow showers later Wednesday night into Thursday. Snow accumulations of 4 to 7 inches are possible across southern Lower Michigan tapering to an inch or less closer to the US 30 corridor. The combination of snow and blowing snow will lead to reduced visibilities and slick road conditions. The greatest impacts are expected across southern Lower Michigan where a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Berrien, Cass, and St. Joseph Counties, but moderate impacts are possible across extreme northern Indiana. Stay tuned for updates.

12/03/2024

A strong cold front will push across Southeast Michigan bringing rapidly changing conditions Wednesday Evening. Snow squalls will be possible sometime between 6-11pm which could result in rapid snow accumulations of less than 2 inches with low visibility. Southwest winds 15 -30 mph becoming northwest Wednesday night.

11/30/2024

Confidence is reasonably high with this much lead time that a clipper system will impact the Great Lakes late Tuesday night through Wednesday. Systems of this nature often drop a few inches of accumulation and move by quickly. The exact path of the Low Pressure and specific snowfall totals will have to come later, however impacts to the Wednesday morning and evening commutes appears possible.

The system will likely drag down even colder air behind it, so lake effect snow will continue late week into next weekend. It's a cold and wintry pattern moving forward.

So you’ve heard it’s gonna be cold soon, right? But no one really is defining what cold is… could we see 30s? 20s? Teens?

A very simple answer:

Based on current model data, we expect temperatures to drop after Thanksgiving. So Friday of this upcoming week. The high temperatures will likely fluctuate just a tad between now and then, but overall…

High temps in the mid to upper 20s and low temps in the mid teens seem very plausible. This pattern will last into the first week of December so it will be “cold” for multiple days, not just one day.

Now is the time to get your outdoor activities done. Christmas decorations? Put em up. Got leaves to rake? Bag em up!

Our first cold snap is coming soon.

Here is your daily forecast!

A complex set up is in place today through tomorrow with a rapidly deepening area of low pressure which will develop over the state today. Everyone will start as rain today before a transition to snow occurs by evening for the western UP and areas SW of Ga***rd. Temperatures will be warmer across the eastern half of the state on the East and North side of the surface low.

As the surface low deepens it will draw colder air down to the surface on the South ann West sides of the low. Temperatures will drop near freezing with temperatures near 32-33°F. This will allow for a changeover from rain to wet snow. Minor accumulations are possible however major accumulations are not expected as ground temperatures are very warm with soil temperatures in the 40s and 50s. This will limit accumulations. Nonetheless some minor accumulations are expected mainly on grassy surfaces and suspended surfaces.

As the low progresses South overnight some gradual warming will take place on the North side of the low which may help to melt some of the snow which fell previously. Snow may briefly change back over to rain on the North side of the surface low. After the surface low moves out of the regiontomorrow, colder temperatures will move in behind it.
