Happy anniversary to Snapshots, released on March 12, 2021. After making my four album ambient Elements project in 2020 I returned to the piano and made my most intimate album but with a twist. I sat at the piano, set a timer, and improvised for a minute. I recorded about 40 of these short improvs and chose my 25 faves for Snapshots. Sarah provided ridiculous titles such as “the opposite of a bagel” and “an old man puts on galoshes” in an effort to make some light of the mostly somber music. If you’ve not heard it please give it a spin…and if you have I’d love to know which piece (or title) was your favorite!

My favorite corner of the loft. The CP70 piano has given me so many gifts over the years. The little Korg Lambda string synth on top shows up on all my albums…always reminds me of Tangerine Dream!

Nine years ago in February I went WAY outside my comfort zone and released my first cd of original music. I was pretty well known by that point as an engineer and producer in the new age world due to all the records that Will Ackerman and I had been producing together, but my own music had been more or less out of sight. It is completely terrifying to allow the world to see your art. It blows open all the protections we put around ourselves and almost invites judgement. I had no idea what would come of it. Nearly a decade later I’m SO much more comfortable sharing my creations with the world. I feel like I’m, in some small way, creating the opportunity for moments of peace and reflection in other people’s lives. I’m so glad this is the road I chose to walk down.

“Runaway” by Del Shannon was the first song I ever really heard a synthesizer on. Max Crook played an instrument he made to create the bizarre little solo section of the song and I have always loved it. My dad had many of these “hits” lps and I listened to all of them when I was in grade school. For some reason I can’t quite get this one on the turntable, though.

Platform8 songs are slowly coming out on the streaming services. “Warmth” is the strange story of a dying woman turning down an offer of eternal life from heat-radiating aliens. Or something like that. We’re revealing how curious this album gets. It was a dream of mine to make an album that had a foot in ambient and a foot in dream pop and I think we made something that is truly unlike anything we’ve heard before.

Oord 17 continues my series of “places made of sound.” I started making these longer, slow, environmental pieces to sit behind my piano improvisations but over time they have become more fully formed and self-sufficient. I never know what I’ll end up with when I sit down to create one of these, and when a landscape that feels like a viable place to spend time emerges I know I’m on the right path. Both a ten minute version and an hour-long version are available for name-your-own-price on Bandcamp.

Most mornings start with a quick visit to the piano to see what it has to say. Some of my favorite pieces of mine start as little videos like this where I’m feeling out a melody and chord progression. I sit down, wedge my phone into the keys of the synth above my trusty CP70 piano, push record, and see what shows up. It’s sort of like checking a mailbox. This was what arrived this morning…first and only take. #improv #piano #cp70 #turnoffyourmind #openthedoor #thearrivalofideas

One year ago, on the day after Thanksgiving, the creative space I had lovingly built and then inhabited for a decade was being chain sawed and excavator-ed into piles of very heavy rubble. I had agreed in 2009 when I moved the studio to the building to clear the space back to the slab when I left…and it was dramatic to watch it all go. I’m in an amazing new chapter now, but I’ll always remember the day after Thanksgiving as the day Universal Noise Storage (or any of its other names) was wiped from the face of the earth.

My boys are helping me understand iMovie, and we made a little thing with pics from yesterday and today and some recent stormy music. The natural world, especially the slow motion of tides and time here on the coast, is never far from my mind and always finds its way into my music. My recent “Elements” albums are all about my reaction to the ever shifting nature around me and in the places Sarah takes me. Here’s a minute of a slow gray day.
