New music for other people is always being finished here, too!

I was honored to mix and master "Lineage," the beautiful new album from Michelle Qureshi Music.

I mixed and mastered two cool new piano and keyboard projects from Alise Ashby, "Love Notes" and "Stardust."

I mastered "Singular" the gorgeous new ambient album from David Wahler.

And, of course, I mastered "The Gathering ~ Guitar," the new compilation of guitar music from Imaginary Road Studios which contains 17 tracks of really great guitar music produced over the years by combinations of William Ackerman, Corin Nelsen, and me.

Hi, my name is Tom and I have a problem.

New arrivals to the writing room… Hales Design Group Concept 3 speakers. Since I’ve had a writing rig set up I’ve been in search of speakers that hit the sweet spot of moving a lot of air and being accurate enough that I’m not having to fix everything when I hear it in the mastering room downstairs. I think these things are keepers, which is good because at 200lbs each these things nearly killed Ruddock Osbourne and me as we hauled them up the stairs.

"Tides" is my newest single... if you liked "Shelter" it seems like a companion to that song.

"Oord 16" is the latest in my places-made-of-sound series... an hour of slow, mysterious landscape.

And "The Clearing on the Hill," from "Linger," got an extended remix and is now available (free) as an hour-long version.

The idea to make these very long pieces came from a Bandcamp fan, and I'm so glad I went down that path. I've learned a lot about manipulating my state of mind by spending so much time inside this music.

It's been a pretty ambient first half of 2024 here at Sounds & Substance. The process of music making for me is sort of like opening a door... I rarely have preconceived ideas about what I "should" be creating and do my best to get out of the way of whatever music wants to come through. Lately it's been a lot of slow motion environmental music showing up, and I love being in that zone.

This year I'm releasing an hour-long "audio environment" in the middle of every month. The slightly ominous "Oord 16" is the most recent piece, preceeded the distant storm of "from here" and the more peaceful "remembering."

"Verloren II: Elevations" follows up the original album from 2022 with more of the mysterious ambient pieces that arrive when the door swings open.

It's release day for "Unity," the beautiful new album by Raphael Groten and Rebecca Kodis. I had such a great time helping Raphael and Becca create this music... it's all heart and spirit and features Raphael on guitars, flutes, percussion and vocals, and Becca on violin and vocals. Other luminaries appearing include Mr. William Ackerman himself on guitar, Eugene Friesen on cello, and MICHAEL MANRING on bass. Early reviews have been fantastic and I hope you have a chance to give it a listen on your streaming service of choice!

I’m having WAY too much fun clicking meta’s “Tom Eaton’s album recommendations” button. Actual Ineptitude is what AI stands for, apparently. I didn’t realize that my 15 full length albums were so hard to find- Meta came up with only one correct title so far (with the wrong date).

Thank you for all the birthday wishes! I had a quiet day doing my taxes and cleaning… a perfect birthday. There was also cake.

Maybe next years my eyebrows will finally give up on the dream of me having red hair again. Onward!!

I talked with Larry Crane, the editor and founder of Tape Op Magazine recently and was trying to remember when I wrote the little article on patchbays for them. It’s still online twenty-two years later. Which is cool because I like the number twenty-two.

The article is older than either of my kids, and was a distillation of things I learned from internships, reading, practical experience building, owning, and running studios, and a whole lot of formative time spent installing sound systems with Wayne Fajans for a small part of the now collapsed Daddy’s J***y Music (really) empire. I saw Wayne last week for the first time in maybe thirty years and we’re both still in our audio trenches doing our best to make the world a better sounding place.

Life has a cool way of putting the right people in front of you at the right time.
