This is the picture that popped up today on my TimeHop from one year ago today. In our 4th episode, out on February 14th, we talk about our postpartum journeys and this photo, funny enough, captures part of mine.
This was the day I was admitted to the hospital, one week postpartum, with postpartum preeclampsia. The bedside commode was brought to me after over an hour of begging and pleading with ER nurses to get me unhooked to everything because, despite being a teacher with a bladder of steal, I had reached my limit and it was painful. It was during the admitting process, that I was tested for COVID and found out I was positive. So here I was, in the ER, one week postpartum, suffering from postpartum preeclampsia AND COVID.
A 24 hour magnesium drip and 36 hour ordeal later… I was released from the hospital. I, a nursing mother, did not eat or drink anything for almost 30 hours while on that drip. I continued pumping every two hours, but feared my nursing days were numbered… thank goodness they weren’t.
This whole experience was a nightmare. Postpartum life is HARD... I can’t say that my physical health problems didn’t impact my mental health either. The fears and anxiety I felt in that ER room, alone (because of COVID) and the worry about my week old infant, my 2 year old and my husband, consumed me and spilled into a bit of my postpartum life. The experience shaped the rest of my postpartum experience and my return to work.
Jamie and I will share all about our postpartum journeys and more with you all when we drop our next episode February 14 ❤️
