My name is Daniel Johnson, and Iâve been your editor/social media/web admin this year. Back in August, most of you had never heard of The Windy Hillâ but in the months since, weâve seen a wave of new support from students, parents, and administrators. We jumped from 100 IG followers to 700, and from a most-read-article of 100 views to over 300 views. With your support, we reported on sports and club events, covered controversial issues in the community, highlighted individual student accomplishments, maintained weekly letter day and event calendars, made countless jokes, and even wrote about our favorite shows. All that to sayâ now more than ever, The Windy Hill is a hub for the student voice. Itâs a place you can come to casually remember the letter day, laugh at a stupid logo edit, celebrate a classmate, or to gain new clarity on an important issue going unnoticed.
My class has just graduated, so Iâll say two last things as a newspaper editor to our student readers. 1) Donât stop reading at the headline. With the constant information overload of our generation, itâs not surprising that we all do it. But when you read the article that comes after the headline (for both local and national news), you actively educate yourself and connect yourself to your community. When possible, take the few minutes to break your scroll and read the article. And 2) Rumors are nasty, and they spiral out of control. Donât assume that everything you hear is true, and be careful about what you pass on further. Thereâs always a reason why people say what they do.
Weâre glad to have helped you guys navigate this year, and The Windy Hill will be right back here when you come back from break. Have a great summer!
