DEL RIO – In a recent operation under "Operation Lone Star," Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers discovered 17 illegal immigrants crammed inside a hidden compartment of a cloned home improvement delivery truck during a traffic stop in Kinney County.
The incident occurred on the morning of Friday, August 30, when a DPS Trooper stopped what appeared to be a Lowe’s Home Improvement delivery truck on US-277 near Del Rio. Suspicious of the driver’s inconsistent travel details and odd behavior, the Trooper conducted a search of the vehicle. Inside the truck’s cargo area, Troopers found a false compartment, only three feet wide and lacking ventilation, where 17 migrants were concealed.
The group, comprising four women and 13 men from Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico, was quickly rescued. Several were treated for dehydration before being handed over to Border Patrol.
The driver, identified as 28-year-old Cezanne Megel Patterson from Jackson, Mississippi, was arrested and charged with smuggling of persons with the likelihood of serious bodily injury or death. He was taken to the Val Verde Processing Center for further processing.
