The wildly popular series Stranger Things is set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana — but did you know it is actually inspired by Durham, North Carolina?

That’s because the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, were born and raised in Durham and attended Jordan High School.

Meet (Lauren) and (Jeremy), who created this reel to break down all the Durham connections in Season 1. Even cooler? Both of them attended Jordan High School at the same time as the Duffer Brothers.

Now that’s Stranger Things. Stay tuned for more season breakdowns!

BREAKING — NC Teachers In Action, a grassroots community of educators across the state, is organizing a callout tomorrow Wednesday January 7 from 8 am to 4 pm, with additional callouts planned on the seventh day of each month through April.

Hundreds of teachers are planning to take “personal leave” to demonstrate at intersections throughout Wake County and other counties across North Carolina.

Their demands include higher pay for advanced degrees, the unfreezing of step increases, caps on health care premiums, and the restoration of retiree health benefits.

Organizers are inviting community members, parents, and PTA members to stand in solidarity.

Educators are also encouraged to communicate with their school administrators and PTAs in advance to minimize any impact on schools and students.

There’s always something new to discover at the 21c Museum Hotel Durham, located in the heart of downtown at 111 Corcoran Street.

This unique hotel blends history, art, and hospitality under one roof — home to the Counting House NC restaurant, a contemporary art museum on the second floor, and even a preserved historic bank vault in the basement.

That’s because the building itself dates back to 1937, when it originally served as the Durham Bank & Trust Company.

Inside the museum, rotating and curated exhibitions keep the space ever-evolving. Currently on view is “Labor & Materials,” an exhibition exploring the evolution of industry in the 21st century and the delicate balance between promise and peril. The exhibit offers a powerful look at today’s living and working conditions around the world.

We are coordinating with them and here's what we can share at this time. Stay tuned for more updates and together let's spread peace and compassion.

🙏 Today marks Day 69, they just left Monroe, Georgia outside of Atlanta. This is their 120-day, 2300-mile journey which is expected to end on February 13 in Washington, DC. Walk for Peace will pass through Raleigh between January 20 and 30, including a stop at the North Carolina State Capitol. We will share local routes when available. See route map.

🙏 The monastics will need escorts through major highways, lodging, and food donations as they pass through Raleigh. If you are a local organization or business that would like to assist, send us a PM or email ([email protected]).

Today marks Day 69 of Walk for Peace — a 120-day, 2,300-mile journey led by Buddhist monks and their loyal dog, Aloka, as they walk through 10 states from Texas to Washington, D.C., promoting unity, compassion, and healing across America.

The monks are in Monroe, Georgia today and are expected to arrive at our nation’s Capitol on February 13.

Along the way, they honor ancient traditions by eating just one meal per day, sleeping outdoors beneath trees, and relying entirely on donations.

Walk for Peace will pass through Raleigh this month between January 20 and 30, including a stop at the North Carolina State Capitol with an additional meal stop planned.

The public will have opportunities to see the monks; however, please be respectful and quiet on their walk. One monk sustained a serious leg injury after being struck in Houston, underscoring the importance of safety and mindfulness.

We will update the community with exact Raleigh locations and dates. You can also follow them on their tracker.

One of our contributors traveled to Georgia, so keep an eye out for a video later today.

May 2026 bring peace to all.
