Durham Police investigators are seeking the public’s help in locating Johanna Bateman, 38. Ms. Bateman was last seen on January 16, 2025, in the area of Hillsborough Road and Christian Avenue close to the CVS. Ms. Bateman is described as a White female with blonde hair, approximately 5’7” tall, and weighs between 100 - 120 pounds. If you see Ms. Bateman, please call 911 or Corporal Riley at 919-560-4440 ext. 29118.

COMMUNITY ALERT — There is a person impersonating an Immigrations Customs And Enforcement (ICE) official driving around Durham in a fake Border Patrol truck with similar distinct green band and markings.

This person has been spotted outside Super Compare Foods Supermarket and El Centro Hispano near Downtown Durham.

However, the truck is labeled “THOT PATROL” and is in fact related to a 2021 Parody. Super Compare Foods released this statement and has filed a police report and is pursuing legal action.

SCHOOL CLOSED AGAIN - Durham Public Schools will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, January 23 for students and staff due to unsafe travel conditions caused by inclement weather. All district activities and events are canceled. Thursday will be an optional remote workday.

The City of Durham is looking for Artists, Artist Teams, or Artist and Fabricator Teams with experience in projects centered around community-based engagement and storytelling to design and install public art at Crest Street Park located at 2503 Crest Street in West Central Durham.

The selected Artist or Artist Team will have an estimated total public art project budget of up to $46,000 and will be paid $16,000.

NO SCHOOL WEDNESDAY — All Durham Public Schools will be closed for students and staff tomorrow Wednesday, January 22.

Wednesday will be an optional remote workday for staff. All DPS facilities will be closed, and all district activities are canceled.

NO SCHOOL FRIDAY 📣

Due to the early afternoon arrival of winter weather tomorrow and to ensure the safety of all students and staff, Durham Public Schools will be closed tomorrow, Friday, January 10.

Friday will be an optional remote workday. Staff are asked to confirm plans to work remotely, take leave, or make alternate arrangements to make up time with their supervisor. Essential personnel should report to work as directed by their supervisor. All DPS facilities will be closed through the weekend and all district activities are canceled.

Due to the potential for icy road conditions in the morning, Durham Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay this morning Monday, January 6 for students and staff. Employees who are designated as essential personnel during inclement weather should report to work as directed by their supervisor.

Buses will run two hours later than normal.

Schools will begin two hours later than their regular start times.

Before-school programs will also operate on a two-hour delay.

We will be sure to provide updates should conditions worsen. Please stay safe!

We are full of sadness to report that Ripken the Bat Dog passed away unexpectedly on New Year's Day after "suffering complications from a serious, undiagnosed medical condition”.

Named after baseball legend Cal Ripken Jr., Ripken was the Official Bat Dog for the Durham Bulls Baseball Club, faithfully retrieving bats for Durham Bulls players. As a local (and national celebrity), Ripken often made appearances at NC State Football Games, Carolina Hurricanes Hockey Games, with his last public outing fetching the kicking tee at the December 22 Carolina Panthers Football game.

Beloved by all, Ripken even had his own official Topps Baseball Card.

Sharing our favorite moment of Ripken we captured at the Durham Bulls Fan Fest. Beaming with pride, may you rest in heaven Ripken and symphathies to the entire Ripken family.

FAMILY ASSISTANCE — Durham Families can receive $750 per month for a year

Durham County is piloting a guaranteed monthly income program in 2025 starting in January.
✨
The county will randomly select 125 families to receive $750 a month for a year. The participants will also receive $100 a month to complete surveys so researchers can analyze the results.
✨
Another 125 people in Durham County will also receive $100 a month to provide comparable data.
✨
There is no-strings-attached, use the money however you want.
✨
Applications open this month in January to adult residents of Durham County who parent at least one child under 18 and make below 30% of the area’s median income for Durham.

Crank on over! Downtown Raleigh based cycling-themed brewery Crank Arm Brewing Company just opened a new taproom in Downtown Durham.

You’ll find Crank Arm’s beloved line of craft beer, cocktails, wine, and more, with a rotating beer special that helps fund WNC relief efforts.

PLUS starting next week, Crank Arm kicks off weekly cycling and run clubs, trivia nights, and other pop up events that serve the Bull City community.
