NO SCHOOL FRIDAY 📣

Due to the early afternoon arrival of winter weather tomorrow and to ensure the safety of all students and staff, Durham Public Schools will be closed tomorrow, Friday, January 10.

Friday will be an optional remote workday. Staff are asked to confirm plans to work remotely, take leave, or make alternate arrangements to make up time with their supervisor. Essential personnel should report to work as directed by their supervisor. All DPS facilities will be closed through the weekend and all district activities are canceled.

Due to the potential for icy road conditions in the morning, Durham Public Schools will operate on a two-hour delay this morning Monday, January 6 for students and staff. Employees who are designated as essential personnel during inclement weather should report to work as directed by their supervisor.

Buses will run two hours later than normal.

Schools will begin two hours later than their regular start times.

Before-school programs will also operate on a two-hour delay.

We will be sure to provide updates should conditions worsen. Please stay safe!

We are full of sadness to report that Ripken the Bat Dog passed away unexpectedly on New Year's Day after "suffering complications from a serious, undiagnosed medical condition”.

Named after baseball legend Cal Ripken Jr., Ripken was the Official Bat Dog for the Durham Bulls Baseball Club, faithfully retrieving bats for Durham Bulls players. As a local (and national celebrity), Ripken often made appearances at NC State Football Games, Carolina Hurricanes Hockey Games, with his last public outing fetching the kicking tee at the December 22 Carolina Panthers Football game.

Beloved by all, Ripken even had his own official Topps Baseball Card.

Sharing our favorite moment of Ripken we captured at the Durham Bulls Fan Fest. Beaming with pride, may you rest in heaven Ripken and symphathies to the entire Ripken family.

FAMILY ASSISTANCE — Durham Families can receive $750 per month for a year

Durham County is piloting a guaranteed monthly income program in 2025 starting in January.
✨
The county will randomly select 125 families to receive $750 a month for a year. The participants will also receive $100 a month to complete surveys so researchers can analyze the results.
✨
Another 125 people in Durham County will also receive $100 a month to provide comparable data.
✨
There is no-strings-attached, use the money however you want.
✨
Applications open this month in January to adult residents of Durham County who parent at least one child under 18 and make below 30% of the area’s median income for Durham.

Crank on over! Downtown Raleigh based cycling-themed brewery Crank Arm Brewing Company just opened a new taproom in Downtown Durham.

You’ll find Crank Arm’s beloved line of craft beer, cocktails, wine, and more, with a rotating beer special that helps fund WNC relief efforts.

PLUS starting next week, Crank Arm kicks off weekly cycling and run clubs, trivia nights, and other pop up events that serve the Bull City community.

Conveniently located on the ground floor of the Beckon Apartments at 620 Fernway Ave, Crank Arm is part of “The Bullpen” (Downtown Durham’s Social District).

COMMUNITY ALERT — Several areas of Duke University Hospital experienced significant flooding overnight due to a burst water pipe particularly the Emergency Department.

People are urged to seek emergency care at other area hospitals or an urgent care center if possible.

BREAKING — UNC officials just officially announced Legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick as the next football coach for the Tar Heels, agreeing to a 5 year deal at $10M/year.

The UNC board of trustees is expected to formally approve the contract Thursday morning.

As the former head coach of the New England Patriots with a record 6 Super Bowl wins, this will be Bill's first stint at the college level.

Welcome to Chapel Bill.

Get ready for the Durham Holiday Parade this Saturday December 14 starting at 10am down Main Street in Downtown Durham.

Will these Two Guys make a comeback?

Cheer on hometown bands, drill teams, schools, and community groups as they make their way. The procession will conclude with a guest appearance from Santa.

This is a FREE event, rain or shine. Seating will not be provided so bring your chairs and blankets.
