Hey, don't take my word for it that Missy Raines is gonna raise the roof this Wed night at Magnetic Sound Studios for a concert. You can take Alice Gerrard's word for it.. she might know a thing or two about Bluegrass music! Tickets are going fast, but still available as of Monday afternoon.

If you're a fan of Irish music, or any traditional music from the British Isles, or are a big fan of intricate guitar playing and open tunings, then I'm sure you'd enjoy seeing Sarah play and sing.

"Sarah McQuaid’s lush, chocolatey voice combines with her engaging personality, subtle mastery onstage” (Huffington Post) and “brilliant musicianship” (fRoots) on acoustic and electric guitars, piano and (occasionally) drum to create a truly immersive experience.

Born in Spain, raised in Chicago, holding dual Irish and American citizenship and now settled in rural England, she brings the eclecticism of her background to her “captivating, unorthodox songwriting” (PopMatters) and choice of material, spanning genres and defying categorisation.

All this is abundantly demonstrated by her new live album and video series "The St Buryan Sessions" — but needs to be savoured in person to be fully appreciated.

“McQuaid’s voice, a fragile, starkly resonant alto, has always been a thing of folk-trad beauty,” wrote reviewer Kenny Berkowitz in Acoustic Guitar magazine, “but here, with ambient mics placed around the church’s interior, it takes on a new joyfulness and a deeper darkness.” Ink 19’s Bob Pomeroy called it “a starkly minimalist recording of exceptional beauty”, and Folk Radio UK described it as “a wonderful, expressive and intimate live album from a consummate performer.”

We're taking the wraps off our Fall 2023 concert lineup - Check it out!

Friday Sept 8th -- Alice Gerrard and Friends
- Much loved bluegrass legend and Durham resident has a new record coming out this month - help her celebrate the release of her new album with the band that played on the album: fiddler Tatiana Hargreaves, banjo player Reed Stultz, bassist Hasee Ciacco and Sacred Steel Guitarist DaShawn Hickman

Wed Oct 4th -- Sarah McQuaid - Spanish-born singer songwriter who literally wrote the book on Irish DADGAD guitar playing. World traveler and heavily influenced by Irish, British and American traditional music with a stellar voice and guitar chops.

Wed Nov 8th -- Louis Michot -- Fiddler and lead singer for the Grammy-winning Cajun group "The Lost Bayou Ramblers". Louie is making a short tour in a Trio-lineup to introduce his first solo record (which includes an all-star lineup of guests). Do not miss this one! Cajun music fans, you have been warned!

Fri Dec 1st -- The Great Hammond Organ Spectacular - featuring two stellar local outfits: The Dan Davis Organ Trio -- and the wild and funky Organ Failure! You'll be dancing whether you like jazz, funk or soul.

All shows start at 7:30pm and take place at Durham's newest recording studio and performance space: Magnetic Sound Studios -- located in the Lakewood Shopping Center not far from The Scrap Exchange. We had a great time with the Eric Hirsh Quartet last night - celebrating their saxophonist Aaron Hill, who’s moving to WA for a great new job. Eric, Stephen Coffman, Peter Kimosh and Aaron tore it up with a bunch of tricky tunes from Eric’s pen. It was great fun to have so many of Aaron’s friends here for the show and some fellowship - including Peter Lamb, F.O. Finch, Jim Crew, Rebecca Conley, Andy Kleindienst. We’ll miss you and your great sax playing here, Aaron, but are excited for you and Billie’s new jobs out West!

We recently kicked off our new monthly concert series at Magnetic Sound Studios with Erika Lewis and Steven Paris with Derrick Spivey on bass. It was incredibly moving to see so many people in the studio, enjoying a concert with such outstanding musicians from New Orleans, Italy and Asheville. Thank you everyone that bought a ticket and came out to support this oddball little experiment in live music here in Durham. Howdy Howdy friends - we're gonna put on a show! Or more precisely, we're gonna put on a monthly show, here at Magnetic Sound Studios in Durham. To kick off this new concert series, our first show will feature the amazing chanteuse, Erika Lewis - who is the lead vocalist for the infectious and incredibly rambunctious New Orleans Brass Band Tuba Skinny. On Wed March 29th, Erika brings her trio, including Italian guitarist Steven Paris and bassist Derrick Spivey. You can count on hearing some great swing, country, blues, folk and even original songs from Erika's solo record "A Walk Around the Sun". Magnetic Sound Studios was pleased to host the inaugural meeting in Durham of The Music Friendly Communities program.

The Music Friendly Communities program is working with these three pilot cities in N.C. to develop strategies that will help strengthen their music-based economies. Tess Mangum of Sonic Pie Productions and the Durham Arts Council facilitated the meeting.

The N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources is partnering with N.C. Governor Roy Cooper’s Hometown Strong effort and consultancy firm Sound Diplomacy to develop the North Carolina Music Friendly Communities program. Three North Carolina cities were chosen to participate during the pilot program’s first year — Durham, Shelby and Elizabeth City.
