Congratulations to Janet Reed on her retirement after serving 19 years as executive director of the Durant Area Chamber of Commerce. A retirement reception was held for her Thursday evening at the Bell Tower Event Center.

The Durant Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet was Saturday night at Lost Street Brewing Co. and the theme was, "Yacht Rock." Among awards presented were: Large Business of the Year, Lighthouse Behavioral Health; Small Business of the Year, Asian Gourmet; Volunteers of the Year, Krysten Brown and Melodee Teran; Dean Samuel Spirit Award, Scott Corbin; Hall of Fame Inductees, Mona Campbell and Robert Holliday, and Above and Beyond Award, The Peyton Project. Retiring chamber executive director Janet Reed was presented a Hall of Fame Award and tickets for a cruise, and new CEO of the chamber Kara Byrd was recognized. Outgoing Chamber President Rob Piearcy passed the gavel to incoming President Matt Hunt. Outgoing board members and current and former members of Leadership Durant also were recognized.

A pickup slid off Robinson Street Thursday morning on the east side of Durant and crashed into a house. No one was home at the time of the accident and the pickup occupants were not injured.

The Durant Lady Lions basketball team won 76-31 Tuesday night against McAlester in their first game since the tragic Christmas Eve loss of their coach Will Robinson and his daughter Clara.

A reception for Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Chancellor Sean Burrage was held Monday evening in the Southeastern Hallie McKinney Ballroom. Chancellor Burrage is a former president of Southeastern.
SE President Thomas Newsom presented Chancellor Burrage with a proclamation.

Bryan County Sheriff Johnny Christian, District 2 Commissioner Justin Boone, Court Clerk Stacy Canant and County Clerk Lacy Allred were sworn in Thursday morning by Bryan County Associate District Judge Abby Rogers. County and court clerk deputies also were sworn in.

The Durant Lions Club, in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program, had their annual toy giveaway Saturday morning. Durant Lions Club member and Bryan County coordinator for Toys for Tots Brian Bond said about 800 families were served.

Southeastern Oklahoma State University held its 2024 fall commencement ceremonies on Friday, Dec. 13 and Saturday, Dec. 14, at Bloomer Sullivan Arena. Master’s degrees and graduate certificates were awarded Dec. 13 and on Dec. 14, baccalaureate degrees were presented.
