🌟 Update!!! 🌟

Hi everyone! Jes here. As I'm sure you have noticed Sober Duluth has been quiet during the pandemic. However, I have been hard at work getting my cosmetology license and helping my wife open our barbershop and salon Deep Cuts. Fashion and hair are a passion of mine and I look forward to another adventure in my life. If you're looking for a stylist, my books at are now open and feel free to connect with my stylist page 🌈

As the pandemic continues on, I'm still unsure of the future for Sober Duluth pop-ups, but will keep everyone posted as time goes on. Thanks for understanding. Cheers!

Edit: postponed due to the rise in the delta variant situation.

We're Coming Back! 🤞

Greetings! We are closely monitoring health and safety related to the ongoing pandemic, but have begun planning some upcoming (all ages) events that (if it remains safe) we would love for y'all to attend!

Duluth Superior Pride is fast approaching and on Sunday, September 5th, we're planning something super rad with the help of our friends over at Hat Jugglers. Prepare yourselves for an evening of honoring the rising Phoenix within us all; whether it's our rebirths relating to Pride, Sobriety, Pandemia, and beyond. 🔥❤

Stay tuned to our socials for the official updates!!!

If you are an artist/musician/creative that would like to get involved, send us an email!

Also, keep your calendars clear for some more sober fun, on 9/25 and 10/30, to be announced later. 🥳

Happy Pride Month, y'all! We took some time away from Sober Duluth, but as it becomes safer, and more people are getting vaccinated, we're feeling motivated to ease back out into the world. 😎

So this Wednesday in Lincoln Park at Wild State Cider it's Pride Night! 🌈

Social hour from 6-7 hosted by our friends at the Duluth Q***r Outdoor Club and bingo starts at 7! It's free, it's fun, the prizes are 🥳

100% of proceeds go to support MN based camper scholarships to Brave Trails 🏕

ATTENTION: Wild State is a cidery that sells alcohol alongside NA options like Athletic Brewing Company brews, various kombuchas, and Camp Creemee ice cream! 🤤

We hope to see you there! Cheers! 🍦

shh... don't wanna say this too loud, but... spring is coming... 🌺

Something we do love to shout about is: you get to decide how sober fits you! 🗣

We've had a few folks in our inbox wondering if their sobriety experience was valid. And guess what? Everyone's experience is valid.

Different people have different experiences, but different doesn't mean wrong or bad.

If Sober is the label you use to describe your experience: rad!

If someone else is trying to tell you how you describe your experience: boo!

You do you. 🖤

❗️Urgent request❗️

Have you lived in sober housing in Minnesota? Has a family member? Have you experienced harm or loss related to the sober housing industry? Contact us via DM (preferred) or at [email protected]

Over the past two years, we have had discussions and meetings with people who use drugs and those in recovery about their experiences at sober homes. We have heard stories of dehumanizing treatment. When evicted, most homes require residents to leave immediately—regardless of if a resident is experiencing homelessness and doesn’t have anywhere else to go. This is never acceptable, but extremely dangerous during the winter, and now during a pandemic. We have heard stories of people returning to use upon eviction. This can be potentially live threatening with the practice of forced abstinence of homes, lowered tolerance, and an unpredictable drug supply due to prohibition.

Last March, we were involved in producing a letter with directive from State Representative Heather Edelson that Governor Tim Walz’s Executive Order 20-14, an eviction moratorium, applies to sober homes. It was met with backlash from people involved with sober housing—stating that residents are not tenants, and therefore, do not have ANY tenants rights. Meanwhile, residents pay down payments, monthly rent, and sign contracts to reside in sober homes. This is another piece of how people who use drugs are stigmatized and held to different standards than others seeking housing.

We will always center those most impacted by policy. In this case, that is people with past and current lived experience as residents. Legislation is being developed and lived experience is request to create recommendations on oversight for sober housing. Please contact us and will respond with how to submit a testimony.

Read on to discover 3 excellent sober podcasts and what else helps Jackie stay alcohol free!

"Something that helps me stay sober is knowing I'm not going to wake up hungover and not having hangxiety to go along with that. Knowing that wherever I go I'm going to be 100% authentic. And also, as hard as it is, I'm really enjoying getting to learn who I am again and feel all the feelings that go along with that. Being alcohol free has been such a beautiful and humbling experience. Sober podcasts are definitely in my sober f***y pack, and a couple of my favorites are Seltzer Squad and The After Party. Seltzer Squad has a Facebook and discord group that I find really useful as members post about their struggles, milestones, and support for others who are going through it. Aaah, almost forgot the podcast Recovering From Reality as well."

Thanks for sharing 🖤

Sober Duluth Is For Everyone 🖤

Our pal/favorite musician/local celebrity/mental health hero Hannah Rey isn't sober, but expresses "I’m thankful Sober Duluth exists as a strong social support and a gentle reminder to those of us managing use that it’s worth considering how and why we use."

Hannah explains below the intersections between their mental health and alcohol use.

"Daily yoga, regular talk therapy appointments and many small acts of radical self-love set me up for success (things like drinking lots of water, taking vitamin D, kind self-talk, making sure to plan and follow through with zoom chats so social needs are met). My experience with managing mental health has taught me how important it is to pay attention. Prioritizing sleep and making sure I’m eating enough throughout the day stabilizes my mood. Checking in with myself and noticing how I’m feeling helps me manage feelings as they come so they’re less likely to throw me off balance. The better I take care of myself, the less I reach for alcohol."

Harm Reduction and Mindfulness, baybee!

We love you so much 🤗😚🥰

Play The Tape Forward 📼

We asked for one piece of advice he would give to someone trying to not drink. Here's what he had to say:

"Staying sober hasn’t been easy during a pandemic and spending most of my time by myself. I’ve had to learn to acknowledge the cravings to drink myself numb, learn to accept that it’s okay to be tempted but then to lean into the positive coping methods that I learned in treatment and outpatient.

The biggest one for me is to 'play the tape forward' and remember how it feels to be full of regret, hungover, and feeling like the only thing that will ease the pain is to drink again.

For me, the pain and mental health struggles are instant consequences if I lapse and let myself drink again.

I'd rather struggle with an intense craving for a short amount of time and beat it, than feel like s**t for days if I let myself backslide."

Thanks, Eric! 🙌🙌🙌

Super cool article in by our pal 😍

"I had many rock bottoms that led to a couple attempts at sobriety, the longest stretch being two months. But I had no real plan to stay sober, and the liquor was always readily available. In the end, it wasn’t even my most dangerous rock bottom that made me stop. It was a night like many others, at my normal bar, with only intermittent blackouts. I was even home before midnight. But this was one of the first times that the drinking didn’t stop the thoughts. I had flipped the off switch in my brain so many times, it seemed that it finally broke."

Check out The Temper's site for the whole story.

Choosing not to drink anymore doesn't have to come from a rock bottom. You rock, Aprill! 🖤

No More One-Size-Fits-All Sobriety Plans 🎃

A genuine share from one our pals highlighting how finding what works for HIM is the best plan for HIS wellness. 💯

"There are a thousand ways to get sober.

This was a common refrain from one of the counselors I met at Superior Treatment Center, the idea being that there is no one-size-fits-all method to recovery.  If AA turns you off, try Health Realization.  If 12 step meetings make you uncomfortable, check out Celebrate Recovery.  Not ready to commit to full sobriety?  Give the Moderation Method a try. Or develop a system that works for you. 12 step programs and AA meetings have helped a lot of people but that doesn’t mean that they’re the only way out.  I personally got frustrated by those methods and especially pressure from well-meaning family and friends that thought I needed to do those things to get sober. Instead I have found, through lots of trial and error, what works for me.

If you feel you are doing harm to yourself and others through your use and you’re ready to make a change then there is a way for you to do that."

We love ya, Ryan!

Congrats on 18 months Alcohol Free, Eve! 🥳

Eve compiled a helpful list for what can happen when you give up alcohol. Thanks 🖤 Be sure to swipe to see the real star Bandit 😻

1. When you stop drinking you learn your patterns of when you did drink and where. It takes some conscious thought to find new norms.

2. Not drinking really does help your skin, but if you’re prone to breakouts (like me) you’re still gonna break out. BUT I don’t breakout as often and when I do it’s usually short lived.

3. I’ve lost weight. I don’t know this for a fact because I refuse to weigh myself and scales should be illegal for public use, but I can feel and see that I’ve lost weight.

4. Emotions! Jesus Christ have you heard of emotions? They’re a lot to handle and once I stopped drinking I started actually feeling things that weren’t ‘drunk’ or ‘hungover’ and omg it’s a lot to know (like that one time where I was super sad that I fixed my cat thus robbing her at the chance of motherhood...). If you’re someone who enjoys emotions then you might find this appealing. I, however, find this exhausting and have asked my friends to kill me multiple times ;)

5. People might tell you what they thought of your drinking once you stop and they may be very blunt about it, but I needed to hear it and they mean well so that is important to remember.  This is also a good opportunity to learn to set boundaries.

6. Anxiety still exists, but is more manageable without alcohol and it seems to allow my anxiety medication to work better now that it’s not competing against alcohol.

7. I sleep WAY better! I should get paid to sleep - I’m super good at it. Sans alcohol I actually sleep, not just pass out.

8. Feeling clear and present is really an irreplaceable feeling. This sounds super Scientology-y but sometimes I think “god I used to do this drive hungover” and man, I do not miss that at all. At about week five I felt a cloud lifted off my entire outlook.

9. Accountability can be punitive but support is encouraging and I’ve had amazing support in this.

10. AF isn’t for everyone and that’s totally fine:) Maybe someday I’ll have a drink again but for now, for me, this is a good space.
