Our cold-weather issue is hot off the press (mailing today), with a new twist this year. This is our inaugural Travel Edition, that we hope to make an annual event. Within the 160 pages, you’ll find the winners of the 30th Lake Superior Photo Contest (including cover winner Deb Nordgren with her image from Cornucopia, Wis.), a trout recipe, a sampler of annual events around all four shores and two vacation homes that bring fun and ideas for your year-round lifestyle and home décor. Plus we have the 2025 Lake Superior Travel Guide – complete – within these pages. (No more polybag.)

Earlier this week, the Ship Canal closed itself. Thanks for the frosty post, Adam.

Earlier this week, the Ship Canal closed itself. Thanks for the frosty post, Adam.

Frozen canal:

Overnight, a sheet of ice formed as the bitter cold snap continued. Calm but steady winds started pushing the ice sheet out onto the lake, which was fascinating to watch as it maintained its shape. This Polar Vortex brought temperatures down to -22°F, with wind chills as low as -42°F. I was captivated by the shadow of the South Breakwater Outer Lighthouse draping across the icy canal. In the last few days, Lake Superior has been consistently producing photogenic sea smoke!

An Arctic airmass remains over the Northland, producing very cold temperatures and dangerous wind chills. An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect today through Tuesday morning due to wind chills as cold as -50 degrees. Dress warmly in layers, including a hat and gloves/mittens to limit exposed skin if you need to go outside. Stay warm!
