Today afternoon, our Deputy President for Buganda Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi, and Hon. Geoffrey Kayemba Ssolo joined the welfare team to visit our comrades at Kitalya prison.

These nine comrades have not yet broken down despite the prolonged detention that is now coming to five years. They even declined to plead guilty to the trumped up charges when the regime tried to coerce them to take that path.

They are strong in spirit and have authored their request to Parliament ahead of the Friday January 31st Supreme Court ruling on the trial of civilians before the court martial. The demands by these political prisoners are as follows;

1. Demand for unconditional release
2. Demand for bail
3. Demand for the dismissal of their case
4. Demand to be sentenced if found guilty

Comrade Kato Umar wrote the note containing their demands on behalf of the other comrades.

We stand with these comrades and we continue to advocate for their unconditional release and an end to the trial of civilians before the court martial.

Together with some Shadow Ministers, we today held an oversight visit to Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS).
Our focus was the population census carried out last year, which consumed 327 billion shs.

The census had numerous errors regarding the figures of some ethnic groups, faulty gadgets, and some people were also not counted.
Additionally, some enumerators have not yet been paid for the work they did.
UBOS acknowledged all these issues.

We insist, the 327 billion injected into this exercise has got to be properly accounted for.

This morning, the Election Management Committee opened its doors for the candidates who have interest in contesting for the Kawempe North by-election seat and the Councillor Kazo-Angola ward by-election slot under our party flag.

The exercise will run from today up to 12pm noon of Tuesday 4th February 2025 and candidates are expected to attend in person with the required credentials as earlier communicated.

Had interaction with the Secretary General EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY H.E Veronica .M. Nduva & her Deputy this afternoon & received a fair briefing on EAC affairs. I learned that EAC now has 8 member states ,Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, South SUDAN and Somalia. Only Uganda ,Kenya & Rwanda have since fast tracked use of the National ID for immigration clearance and Common EAC tourist visa regime phased out under a coalition of the willing member arrangement.

Uganda contributes above USD 7 Million to the East African Community. EAC expected deliverables would include the common market, Customs Union,Monetary Union& Political Federation.

As the World marked International Customs Day, The East African Community Launched a Single Centralized Customs Platform at its Headquarters,Arusha Tanzania today.

According to EAC, this targets connecting all Revenue systems of member states to ease clearance of goods entering EAC member states. Once goods are captured by a member state,a notice would be sent to each to ease transit within EAC.

That EAC is launching EAC Bonds to stop reliance on COMESA bonds thus reliance on regional insurers would be cheaper and more reliable to improve business in the region.

I'm briefed for goods below $2000 approx UGX 7,400,000/-, There has been developed a simplified trade regime,where these are directly assessed and cleared by a custom officer at the boarder ,only containers and larger goods to go through verification.

IN CUSTOM
-Where as the East African Community settled Common external tariffs, thus aspects like raw materials are free, there is lack of harmonized domestic policies and taxes with the East African Community.

-Infrastructure has been cited as another key barrier to trade within the East African region.

-Non Tariff Barriers have remained a key obstruction to regional trade thus a need to advocate for their removal.Too many roadblocks on trade routes & corruption.

-That EAST African Community members are fast tracking a Common Currency and the extended timeline is 2031 for a monetary union. In trade terms that money is lost by traders in Foreign exchange to clear goods within the region as member states charges in their own currency.

As the Shadow Minister Foreign Affairs ,and as opposition ,we shall continue to monitor and FasTrack the developments in the East African Region & assure Uganda traders and people of our commitment to recommend , support, improve and foster regional trade and meaningful integration.
