The Dublin Chamber of Commerce has a new but familiar face at the helm along with a new location.

Jennifer Hayes has recently been hired as the executive director for the chamber, and the chamber and visitor’s center has relocated to the Blackjack Office Center located in downtown Dublin at 126 E. Blackjack Street.

Hayes may be a new face to some, but she originally moved to Dublin 20 years ago and worked for the bottling plant.

Over the weekend, the Dublin Volunteer Fire Department was busy not only in town but also assisting other departments with multiple call outs over the weekend.

On the evening of Friday, Aug. 16, Dublin VFD was requested by Comanche VFD in a mutual aid call for a fire at a pecan orchard off CR 315.

At 2:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, Dublin VFD and Erath County Fire/Rescue responded to a structure fire to the home of Belinda and Red Seigars on East Chancellor where their barn and RV were a complete loss. Red has previously served as mayor for the city of Dublin.

Belinda’s sister Deborah Lovelace who was living in the RV, lost all of her possessions and the couple lost a lot of possessions which were stored in the barn.

“Our minds are kind of boggled at the moment. We were inches away from a different outlook. Thank God Digger Johnson saw the smoke and banged on our door,” Belinda said.

“Every single thing I’ve gathered through my life is gone. Just gone. I can’t tell you how heartbroken and lost I am,” Deborah wrote on social media. “Some things like clothes and shoes and stuff can be replaced but not all of the memorabilia from my entire life. Pictures, little paintings my grandkids gave me, even the show box that I made when my daddy died. We are grateful to be alive, it went up so fast.”

The community has begun pulling together to help replace belongings. For those interested in contributing financially, a Go Fund Me has been set up.

A 90-day burn ban is now in effect for Erath County.

In a special called Erath County Commissioners Court meeting Monday, Aug. 19, the court unanimously approved a burn ban due to an increased number of fires, high temperatures and low rainfall in the area.

“Dublin is the driest part of the county,” Erath County Fire Marshal Tommy Shelton said.

Currently, the Keetch – Byram Drought Index, which runs from zero to 800, has an average of 611 through the whole county.

He served as Moderator of the Coast Baptist Association for several years, loved to be a part of the Associational Church Camp, and served one term on the Executive Board of the Northwest Baptist Convention.

He was active as a volunteer with many groups ranging from Umpire for Little League games, Referee to his son’s football games, to his involvement with Food Share, The Soup Kitchen at Calvary, on the board with Volunteer Services, or Contact Information and Referral.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Wilma Woods Earles, of Dublin, Texas, his sons, Mark Earles, of Portland, Oregon, Mike Earles, and wife, Velvet, of Dublin, Texas, his daughter, Deana Crumal, and husband, Randy, of Dublin, Texas.

Dublin mourns a local legend as Richard “Truck” Stevens, a Philadelphia Eagle, Baylor Bear and Dublin Lion died Saturday, Aug. 17, leaving a story that dreams can come true with enough passion and determination.

Richard was born in Dublin to Carl and Dorothy Nell Stevens. As a boy, he didn’t have to look any further than across the street for one of his greatest ambitions as the family lived across from the Dublin football stadium. Stevens would climb up to the roof on dark fall nights and picture the day when he could play on that field.

William Hancock’s life has had some ups and downs, and he spent much of his adult years incarcerated. Now out of prison and nearly 20 years sober, Hancock is now enjoying life as an electrical engineer and prison minister. “Instead of burning bridges, I’m building them,” he said.

Upon his release in 2023, he found a job at Electric Distribution and Design Systems, a Dallas-based company that installs generators, solar panels and windmills. Most clients are residential, and Hancock sometimes installs as much as three generators in a week.

The owner of the company, Tommy Edds, works in prison ministry on the side, and now Hancock is involved. “I go back in and minister to prisoners and show them what you can do as long as you have God on your side,” he said.

Museum Matters: For the Dublin Free Fall Fair of 1956, the plan was to move the gymnasium located at Alexander to the Dublin Fair Grounds. The gymnasium was originally built for the Alexander School until school consolidation closed that school and made those students attend class in Dublin. At the Fair Grounds, located in the City Park, workmen were putting the hardwood floors from the gymnasium down for a dance scheduled for July 11. That dance was a Fall Fair fundraiser sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter No. 219.
