THE BLACKWOOD BROTHERS TO HONOR BRUMLEY ON JUNE 5 AT AWARDS SHOW
The Blackwood Brothers will honor 2023 Lifetime Achievement recipient Albert E. Brumley at the Arkansas Country Music Awards on Monday, June 5 at the Reynolds Performance Hall on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.
The Blackwood Brothers formed in 1934, and they remain one of the most legendary names in gospel music history. Over the course of the quartet's 89-year history, they have recorded countless Brumley songs through the years.
"We are honored to not only sing his songs regularly, but to honor the man himself, Mr. Albert E. Brumley, in June in Arkansas," Billy Blackwood said.
Though the names and faces have changed through the years, the Blackwood Brothers’ sound and steep gospel tradition remain. In addition to Billy Blackwood, the group currently consists of Jim Rogers, Jonathan Mattingly, and Eric Walker.
Brumley began writing songs after moving to Hartford (Sebastian County) in 1926 to attend the Hartford Music Institute. The influence that gospel music has had on the country genre and the impact that Brumley's songs have had on the music industry are immeasurable. He penned such standards as "Turn Your Radio On," "I'll Meet You in the Morning," and "Rank Stranger." His most known composition, "I'll Fly Away," is one of music's most iconic songs. It has been recorded by an array of artists from various musical genres.
Brumley lived in Arkansas for a number of years, but he impacted the northwest part of the state much longer than that. Beginning in 1969, his 'Sunup to Sundown Gospel Sing' was a major event. Through 2001, it was held in Springdale before moving for four years to Fayetteville. Brumley was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
At the awards show, Brumley, along with Barbara Fairchild, Reggie Young, and Irby Mandrell, will receive the highest honor for a country music professional in the state of Arkansas.
The Blackwood Brothers join previously announced main stage performers Linda Davis, Louise Mandrell, Ben Haggard, Erin Enderlin, Mae Estes, Tyler Kinch, Midnight South, Sylamore Special, Trey and Lexi Pendley, Pam Setser, Grace Stormont, and Keith Symanowitz for the 2023 Arkansas Country Music Awards. More performer announcements are forthcoming.
The show will be co-hosted by country music journalist and historian Charles Haymes and Miss Arkansas 2014 Ashton Gill. Tickets are on sale now at www.arkansasmusic.org.
