DSU STUDENTS CAN TRAIN TO BE UNITED AIRLINES PILOTS. Delaware State University signed an agreement today with United Airlines to provide aviation students an opportunity to enter United Aviate – a pilot career development program. DSU President Tony Allen and Capt. Mike Bonner, Managing Director of Aviate and Pilot Strategy, signed the agreement on the DSU campus. “Under Lt. Col. Michael Hales’ leadership, our Aviation program has grown threefold and is not just the largest in the HBCU community, but the high quality, low-cost provider among all aviation programs east of the Mississippi,” said Allen. “Our partnership with United Airlines and their Aviate program has been several years in the making and includes a deep, longstanding partnership with JPMorgan Chase and regional market president Tom Horne. Between the three of us, there is an unwavering commitment to build a substantive, inclusive talent pipeline of pilots and aviation management professionals for many years to come.”
Capt. Bonner said, “We are proud to partner with DSU as their longstanding history of attracting and developing skilled aviators incorporates well into our pilot recruitment strategy. Current and future DSU aviation students will benefit from this partnership in their journeys to becoming professional pilots.”
As an Aviate partner, DSU’s aviation program professional pilot students who meet the eligibility requirements can apply to Aviate and upon acceptance receive a conditional job offer as a United first officer. To be eligible, DSU aviation professional pilot students must complete at least two semesters of full-time coursework or graduate with an R-ATP eligible aviation major at DSU, be in good standing at DSU, possess a private pilot certificate, FAA medical certificate and have no more than three primary training failures. As a part of Aviate, after completing their undergraduate journey at DSU, the aviation graduates will continue their pilot journey by accumulating experience towards becoming a United Airlines pilot. The Aviate participants will then have an opportunity to fly for a United Express or Part 135 partner and work their way up to become a United Airlines first officer.

KENT COUNTY PUBLIC SAFETY DEPARTMENT COLLECTS 2,184 POUNDS OF DONATIONS FOR FOOD BANK. The Kent County Department of Public Safety collected 2,184 pounds of non-perishable foods last week, which were donated to the Food Bank of Delaware to help provide Thanksgiving meals for Delaware families in need. The goal was to top last year’s donation of 2,513 pounds of food, but this year’s donations fell a little short. “Although we did not top last year’s collection, we are still grateful for all those that donated to help us fight hunger in our community,” said John Tinger, assistant director of the Department of Public Safety, Emergency Management Division. “I commend our paramedics for their dedication in donating their time between shifts for such a worthy cause, especially those who were pulled away from the event to respond to emergency calls,” said Levy Court Commissioner and Public Safety Chair Robert J. Scott. This year marked the 12th year Public Safety staff collected food for families in need.
