LOCATION CHANGED FOR VETERANS DAY CEREMONY IN DOVER. The Veterans Day ceremony today, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m., organized by Kent County Chapter 850, Vietnam Veterans of America, has been moved indoors due to wet conditions. The ceremony will be held in the Kent County Administration Building, 555 Bay Road, Dover, instead of at the nearby Veterans Memorial Park. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Allen Davies. He served in Vietnam as a thoracic surgeon who occasionally rode on Medivac missions with dustoff rescue crews. His two tours in Vietnam included four days of surgery under fire at Khe Sanh. His book, "The Backside of the Firefight: A Surgeon’s Shop Notes from Vietnam," provides a candid description of his pre-Vietnam years as well. After his service in Vietnam, he practiced as a thoracic surgeon in Wilmington, retiring in 2015. The ceremony is open to the public.

FIRE DRILL PLANNED WEDNESDAY MORNING AT KENT COUNTY ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING. The Kent County Administrative Complex at 555 Bay Road in Dover will conduct a fire drill on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 10 a.m., according to a county press release. The purpose of the drill is to ensure safety procedures are effective and that everyone knows how to respond in an emergency. During the drill, all employees and any customers in the building will be evacuated to ensure full compliance with safety protocols. For customers who prefer to avoid the evacuation process, county officials recommend conducting business
after 11 a.m.

PUBLIC MEETING ON DOVER PARKING GARAGE/MOBILITY CENTER. The Downtown Dover Partnership is hosting a community information session about the proposed design of the 400-space parking garage/mobility center planned downtown on Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 5-7 p.m., at the Hive, 28 W. Loockerman Street. Several conceptual drawings and site plans will be shown. “People may drop by even briefly anytime between 5 and 7 p.m. as the format will be conversational, not a formal presentation,” said Diane Laird, Downtown Dover Partnership executive director. FREE FOOD DISTRIBUTION IN DOVER TUESDAY, JUNE 18. The Food Bank of Delaware will hold a drive-thru food distribution at Dover Motor Speedway Tuesday, June 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The distribution is open to all residents of Delaware but limited to one per household. To speed up the check-in process, pre-registration is requested at https://June18Statewide.eventbrite.com
On-site registration will also be available. Service will be first-come, first-served. Recipients must bring proof that they live in Delaware such as a driver’s license or state-issued ID, utility bill, Delaware SNAP benefits card, etc. The Speedway’s address is 1131 North Dupont Highway, Dover, but for this distribution, enter through the Leipsic Road entrance east of Route 13 near Home Depot and follow the signs. PUBLIC MEETING ON PROPOSED PARKING GARAGE/MOBILITY CENTER IN DOVER JUNE 3. The Downtown Dover Partnership will host an open house on the proposed parking garage/mobility center Monday, June 3 from 3-5 p.m., in the community room at the Dover Public Library. Several brief presentations will be given. Representatives from Mosaic Development Partners, Colonial Parking, EDiS, Bernardon, and the Downtown Dover Partnership will be on hand to receive input. The public is invited to comment on ideas that will be presented and provide input on the design, materials and location. The need for a parking garage/mobility center was identified as a priority in the Capital City 2030: Transforming Downtown Dover master plan to increase parking capacity in the business district for residents, visitors, workers and customers. The proposed location is one block from Loockerman Street, along Minor Street Alley between South Bradford Street and South Governors Avenue, with 400 spaces and five or more stories. The facility could also have bike rentals, storage for bikes and scooters, and be a place to access Uber, Lyft and other transit options. Due to the forecast for rain and thunderstorms, the Memorial Day ceremony scheduled for the Veterans Memorial Park has been moved inside to the Kent County administration complex. Here's the updated info: Kent County Chapter 850, Vietnam Veterans of America, is planning a Memorial Day ceremony open to the public Monday, May 27 at 2 p.m. at the Kent County Levy Court administrative complex, 555 S. Bay Road, Dover. The keynote speaker will be Air Force Lt. Col. Crystal A. Glaster, deputy commander of Mortuary Affairs Operations at Dover Air Force Base. Scheduled participants include master of ceremonies Dave Skocik, life member of VVA Chapter 850 and president of Delaware Veterans Coalition; First State Military Academy of Clayton, Lori Christiansen singing the National Anthem, Rev. Bill Downing, Dover Mayor Robin Christiansen, Joe Startt Jr., president of VVA Chapter 850; Paul Davis, president of the VVA Delaware State Council; Jim Frazier playing “Taps,” and the Delaware Celtic Society Pipe Band playing “Amazing Grace.” The ceremony will also include placement of wreaths in memory of those who gave their lives in military service to our country.

NASCAR DRIVER TO MEET FANS IN DOVER DURING SAFE DRIVING EVENTS. Ross Chastain, driver of the No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Team Chevrolet, will meet fans near Dover Motor Speedway at the Delaware Agriculture Museum on southbound Route 13 Thursday, April 25 from 3-5 p.m. and at Grotto Pizza on northbound Route 13 Saturday, April 27 from 5-7 p.m. as part of the “Use Your Melon” and the“Drive Sober, Arrive Alive” campaigns with the Delaware Office of Highway Safety.
