When Mike Reilly spotted this in the Rewey News, our staff thought it would be a nice story. ‘Donald Bevan, near Lima Union, is well known for making wood items and donating them to clubs, organizations, and individuals. He is very talented with wood and has made many things over the years.’
So, we did just that! I had the pleasure of interviewing Donald in his workshop. At 94, he’s still going strong with his passion as a woodworker. Enjoy the video story and don’t forget to pick up this week's Chronicle as Donald is our featured Spotlight story this week.
Highland is fresh off its 3-day Our Town Celebration. The Chronicle was there Saturday to capture some moments of the day. There was a car show on the grounds, pickleball, softball games, a kid’s carnival, bingo, bean bag tournament, music, a glow run/walk, fireworks, and of course, what has become a staple over the years, their famous chicken barbeque sponsored by the Highland Lion's Club. The lighting of the coals and filling the racks with 650 half-chickens is something to witness and that’s where we start.

Winning a State Title is something every kid wants to achieve in school. In Barneveld, three middle school students, Addison Carden, Mya Norton, and Kelsey Douglas not only won the gold in district, regional, and state competitions, but they recently returned home from Atlanta as National Champions in the Team Engineering Challenge at the National SkillsUSA Championship.
Coach and Technical Education Instructor Will Hodgson has worked with these three young ladies for three years and perseverance paid off. As they say, the third time is a charm. The philosophy of the event is to reward students for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performances, and to keep classroom training relevant to employers’ needs.
Special thanks to friends and parents who shot video and took photos in Atlanta that were used in this video production. There will be a newspaper version of this story in The Chronicle. The team had to design an all-terrain vehicle that could cover a 200-inch obstacle course on a budget of $60. It’s a good story so check it out.
The Barneveld Fire Department escorted the team to the high school for a celebration. The Chronicle was there to capture it. Congratulations to the Barneveld SkillsUSA team!
The Mineral Point Boys and Girls basketball programs had their annual fundraiser on Friday, June 28th at Dodge-Point Country Club. The unique thing about this year’s fundraiser is that it was a great chance to congratulate both head basketball coach Dan Burreson and head golf coach Cory Sokol one more time on their state championship titles from this past school year, and a picture opportunity with the two of them holding championship trophies.
Despite Mother Nature delaying the golf event for an hour, 144 golfers hit the links at noon and were able to finish. Several other non-golfers joined as well and there were many items up for auction at this year's event.
The Democrat and The Chronicle covered the event so you can enjoy the video version here, or make sure you pick up one of the two papers this week for more coverage of the event.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) is a non-profit organization that provides hand-made single or bunk beds to children who don’t have a bed to sleep in. Founded in Idaho in 2012, SHP now has over 270 local chapters nationwide. There are 19 chapters in Wisconsin, with Grant County being one of them.
I interviewed the Co-President of Grant County’s program, Leon Neuheisel, on how SHP works in their county and the high demand for beds for kids. Neuheisel is spreading the word about SHP and hoping other counties will follow Grant County’s lead in building beds for kids who don’t have a bed to sleep in.
Neuheisel will be the guest speaker at the next Dodgeville Kiwanis Club meeting on Tuesday, July 9th beginning at Noon at Dodger Bowl to bring awareness. The presentation is free and open to the public.
The following story will give you a better understanding of how SHP works locally. You can also read the full story in this week’s Chronicle.

STATE CHAMPIONS!!
Pointer Nation was at it again, this time in golf. The fourth time was a charm for Mineral Point as the golf team returned to the State Tournament and won its first-ever State Tournament in Division 3 by twenty strokes over Chetek-Weyerhaeuser at Blackwolf Run playing the par 72 Meadow Valley course Tuesday.
After finishing second last year, and third the two years prior, the Pointer golf team broke through and claimed a gold championship ball for the second time this year, previously winning the state basketball championship in March.
The two-day, 36-hole event was shortened to 27 holes as rain hampered Monday’s round and only nine holes could be played. Drew Aschliman led the Pointers shooting a 27-hole total of 118. He also placed in the top six of the top individuals. Logan Weissinger of Durand-Arkansaw was Medalist shooting a 113.
Alex Ross was one stroke behind Aschliman shooting 119, Eli Lindsey shot 121, Reid Acherman 125, and senior Spencer Workman shot 136.
I was there to capture the moment so enjoy the sights, sounds, images, and interviews of Mineral Point’s State Championship!

Over 130 Dodgeville Volunteers were busy today with their annual Love Dodgeville event on a perfect day to be outside. Love Dodgeville is a day set aside to give the town some ‘love’ by doing community service projects. Today, work was done at the Arboretum, beautifying the four entrances into town, picking up debris at Governor Dodge, cleaning up the recreation trail between Dodgeville and Mineral Point, and at Grace Lutheran Church, May Baskets were made and delivered to residents of Sienna Crest, Crestridge, UHH Assisted Living and Nursing Home, and Stonefield. Volunteers made homemade cookies and the cookies and water were delivered to the working sites.

In Iowa County this past weekend, in a Re-enactment, the 2nd Battalion of the 281st Guards Rifle Regiment defended the Romanian town of Târgu Frumos in April of 1944. Over 200 Re-enactors from all over the United States and Canada were part of this 4-day event.
Hosted in part by the WWII Historical Re-enactment Society, this was an event that was closed to the public. The main focus of this type of event is having a “realistic” battle or scenario. This was a tactical event which is generally a day-long event and takes place on weekends similar to public events.
This was the nation’s largest eastern front Re-enactment event ever. I was able to get access on Saturday to tell the story of why this type of event exists, and why this group partakes and travels long distances to participate with other Re-enactors.
Enjoy the video version of Romanian Spring and don't forget to pick up The Chronicle this week to read about this story and all your local news and sports that happen in Iowa County.
Correction, the event organizer is Adam Bednar, not Andy as highlighted in the video text during Adam's interview.
