Today while we were at United Wireless we learned about fiber optic cables. Here is a very cool display of a fiber optic trunk cable. Inside are 12 smaller cables, and each of those have 12 tiny fibers inside, which you can see in the 2nd photo. Each tiny fiber is capable of handling 100,000 phone calls simultaneously! Fiber optic cables like this have been around used for phone calls since the 70s, but their use for internet has only been around for a couple of decades.

It’s time for the Hatchet game in Dodge City! A rivalry that was started in 1903 continues tonight, we talked with a couple of seniors for the Dodge City Red Demon Football team and asked them what the hatchet meant to them. Senior Dylan Sonday said “it means everything to us we haven’t won it since 2021 so we are coming out here with a chip on our shoulder.” Senior Bryson Unzueta added“ it means a lot to us it’s our last ever WAC game, last ever hatchet game so we just want to come out and perform,” when asked about the importance of this game to the seniors. Dodge City leads the hatchet matchup 52-33-1, regardless we know we are in for a great game at Memorial Stadium tonight!

A slow moving storm system will sit over Arizona Friday and Saturday, and move out onto the plains Sunday and Sunday night. The most widespread rain in southwest Kansas is expected Sunday and Sunday night.

A wooden Windmill is one of the new western inspired decor items being installed as part of the Downtown Dodge City streetscape project. Windmills are a large part of life here on the Great Plains, originally harnessing the wind to pump water for people, livestock, and crops to be able to survive here. Now they are also used to harness wind to generate electricity.

ITC Great Plains will be doing some infrastructure improvements using a HELICOPTER!

Starting next week in Barber, Ford, Kiowa and Clark counties, ITC will focus on upgrading corona rings on existing transmission lines to enhance system reliability. To minimize public impact, ITC Great Plains will utilize a helicopter with line personnel performing the work from the aircraft, to complete this project.

The flights will be conducted in the Bloom, Bucklin, Lake City and Medicine Lodge areas.

If you see a low-flying helicopter near transmission lines, don't be concerned. This is standard procedure. Weather permitting, this project is anticipated to be completed by February 2025.

The Building Solutions, LLC crew is hard at work on the downtown Dodge City streetscape project! A large trench has been dug on Gunsmoke between 2nd and 3rd for new utilities to be placed. A big part of this huge project is updating underground utility infrastructure, some of which is 100 years old! Once that is replaced then we start to see the pretty stuff on top. ALL of the businesses downtown are still open and are accessible during construction, though it might be a bit of a longer walk right now. The business owners would love to see you.
