Here’s one of the most intricate railings that I’ve ever built. I fabricated this amalgamation of steel and wood approximately five years ago and although I refer to it as a “railing”, (it is functional and serves a purpose) I like to think of it more like a sculpture or a work of art. Here’s a short description of what went into this project: I hand-cut the posts out of an old ash tree that recently fell at our farm. I sanded the logs down and then used a grinder to custom fit a 2” square tubing to the unique contours of the wood for the top and bottom rail. Then once the basic frame was in place I took full 20’ lengths of 3/8”, ½” and 5/8” solid steel shaft, cut them to length then heated and formed them to create the tree branch-look while also having to maintain a 4” or less gap between them to meet building code. Then I used a plasma cutter to cut the baseplates out of ¼” plate which were anchored to the floor using 3” screws. The entire piece was then coated with a clear lacquer to seal it.. This was one of those projects that was was difficult, it made me expand my skills and go beyond my comfort zone but not to the point of frustration. It was pleasantly challenging and I’m very satisfied with the end result. The customers were great to work with and I know that it went to an awesome couple that will fully appreciate it!
