What is Ventenata?
Ventenata is an invasive winter annual grass that is quickly spreading throughout the Western States. It has been added to Montana and Wyoming's Noxious W**d lists, and was recently discovered in Harding County, SD. Ranchers need to be aware of this grass and the damage it could cause to their operations.
Cattle will not eat Ventenata due to its high silica content, making it unpalatable. Some compare it to eating glass. Ventenata emerges in the fall and resumes growth in the spring before desirable native grasses. This allows it to mature early in the grazing season and can reduce livestock forage by up to 70%. Due to its early germination, Ventenata dries out early in the season and can increase the risk of wildfires.
There is much more to cover on this grass and the damage it can cause. Please make plans to attend this informative presentation hosted by the Billings County W**d Control Board on the prevention and control of Ventenata.

Let's protect our family, friends, neighbors and state together. We all have a role in preventing wildfires. Here are a few things to remember:
• Avoid burning debris or building campfires when it’s windy and never when it’s restricted.
• Practice good, regular equipment maintenance.
• Avoid parking vehicles in tall grass – hot catalytic converters are prone to igniting dry vegetation.
• Have a fire extinguisher handy, both at home and on farm equipment.
• Make a tillage pass around the perimeter of a field to help prevent fire from spreading to other areas.
• Be proactive by hooking up tillage equipment and filling water tanks to help provide aid to fire departments in case of emergency.

Most important – protect yourself. Don’t try to fight a wildfire on your own. Call 911 to report a fire.
