On this date 51 years ago, a ceremonial groundbreaking was held for the Renaissance Center, on May 22, 1973. Completed four years later, it has remained not only the tallest building in Detroit, but in all of Michigan, ever since. Its future is unclear in the wake of news that GM will be moving out and the property will be redeveloped. Will some of it, or all of it, be torn down? Will it all be saved and repurposed? Time will tell.

: Detroit City Football Club has plans to open up a new soccer stadium in Corktown.

They acquired the site of the former Southwest Hospital at the corner of Michigan Avenue and 20th Street for the purpose of building a new stadium that will serve as a permanent home for soccer in Detroit, with a goal of opening a new soccer-specific stadium by the club’s 2027 season.

“This is a huge step for our organization to build a modern venue to serve our club and community. As longtime residents of the city, with a few of us even living within walking distance of the site, the leaders and founders of the Club view this project not only as an opportunity to grow our organization and sport, but as a civic endeavor to give back to the city we love. We look forward to starting a process to connect with our supporters, city residents, and community leaders, among others, to craft a community-focused, grassroots professional soccer stadium that serves the City of Detroit,” said CEO Sean Mann of Detroit City FC.

Detroit City FC games are currently played at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck. Since 2016, the Club has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors and millions of dollars to small businesses.
