The Delta Sound.

Episode 1054 is coming from my hotel room at the Citadines Bastiile Gare de Lyon in Paris, where I’m appearing in a show dedicated to the art of the late Michael Kelley of suburban Detroit and Los Angeles at the Musee Bourse de Commerce. They’ve titled the show after my blues work in verse, Fattening Frogs for Snakes, so I’ve decided to make an hour of music from the Mississippi Delta highlighting the great artists who have arisen there, including Robert Johnson, Honey Boy Edwards, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James, Earl Ho**er, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Koko Taylor, Hound Dog Taylor & the Houserockers, J.B. Lenoir, James Cotton, Jimmy Reed, the King Biscuit Boys, Little Walter, Magic Sam, and Magic Slim & the Teardrops.

Episode 1042 is coming from RFA headquarters in Detroit’s Cass Corridor and is centered on an obscure recording project that Tom Worrell and I did in New Orleans a few years ago, sponsored by our pal Frenchy but never released, which involves a small set of poems composed by Worrell, recited by myself, and recorded with Tom on piano and assorted helpers in a little studio off of Oak Street. It’s called The Trump Chronicles and in my estimation it’s a brilliant set of satirical works in twisted rhyme schemes that skewer and roast the guy I call Resident Rump. Intermixed are some other pieces Tom and I have recorded together and some of his solo works from the album titled Fess Up, plus a new trio number.

There’s a line in the Townes Van Zandt song, “White Freight Liner,” that goes, “There’s bad news from Houston/ Half my friends are dying.” Guess this is what happens as you get older but I’m starting to feel that way. In the last month four of my friends have passed away, including two long-timers just today: Bill Moran and the legendary John Sinclair.

I met Bill back in the ‘70s when he ran Trade-A-Tape & Records here in Boulder. Over the years we shared countless live recordings. Some weird disease wrecked his life starting a couple years ago.

I met Sinclair at another record store, the Louisiana Music Factory in New Orleans. We quickly became fast friends and blues brothers and he eventually became the managing editor of Blues Access magazine n its final few years. John was a countercultural icon who was perhaps the last embodiment of the beatnik lifestyle. I treasure the memory of just the two us at Common Ground on the Hill screening the film about him, “20 to Life.” His personalized running commentary was priceless.

John was in his 80s and his health was never the greatest but, like Dick Waterman, he was one of those guys on the blues scene you simply expected to be around forever. He leaves behind a great legacy and I’ll miss knowing he’s around.

To the rest of you: PLEASE take care of yourselves; I’ve had more than enough of this.
