Our Story
I started Eighth & Grace Recording before I had a name for it. Unhappy with the recordings my band was getting at the local studio in North Carolina, I decided I could do it on my own. This was back in 2001 so I bought a little Pro Tools rig with a Digi 001 & some other gear, we built a wall in my bass player’s living room for a drum booth, and I recorded my first band’s first EP. After selling over a 1500 copies of that release it was time to try a full length album. I wish I could say I look back on that record in awe, but really I didn’t know crap. I was doing it though and little side projects started happening with my bandmates and our friends. I eventually bought a house on the corner of Grace Ave & Eighth St in New Bern, NC and Eighth & Grace had its first home. The opportunity arose for me to record a couple projects remotely at a friend’s house and that was the first time I discovered how fun it was to record in a new space where all the musicians were comfortable. This lesson served me well. I moved to Chicago in 2010. Out of necessity, I’ve been recording remotely ever since setting up in practice spaces, Tiki-themed basements, and dining rooms. Anywhere that sounds good and can allow the musicians to give me a performance they’re happy with.
My equipment has been chosen very specifically to be reliable as well as portable. As any musician knows the list is always growing. Here’s what I’m using right now. Pro Tools 12
