Road conditions have further deteriorated across western Iowa as freezing rain moves in from the south. Most roads are now considered 'partially covered' with ice. Light freezing drizzle/rain is just south of the metro, though I have not heard reports of this reaching the ground or impacting any roadways. Freezing rain will continue to spread eastward into the overnight increasing in intensity. Roads Saturday morning will likely be ice covered and dangerous. Road temperatures across Iowa remain well below freezing and may not finally rise above freezing until late tomorrow morning. Please stay safe tonight and tomorrow!

WEATHER IMPACT DAYS: FRIDAY/SATURDAY AM
We're still on track to be impacted by a system bringing a mess of precipitation tomorrow night through Saturday. If you have travel plans early Friday you're looking okay, but as we inch towards 6-7pm we'll start seeing some impacts especially in southwest Iowa.

FRIDAY MORNING/AFTERNOON
Friday will start out cold with wind chills in the single digits below zero widespread across the state. Cloud cover will be increasing as we start to pull in moisture from the south as the system bringing in the mixed bag of precipitation approaches. Winds will start to increase as well with gusts of 20-25mph possible beyond the noon hour. Travel will be normal throughout this time with freezing rain not expected to start until later in the evening/nighttime.

FRIDAY EVENING/OVERNIGHT
As the day wears on and the sun sets we'll start to see some light freezing rain make its way into the southwestern portion of the state (5-6pm). This will gradually spread from SW to NE across the state reaching the metro around 7-8pm, Algona around 8-9pm, and Marshalltown around 9-10pm, if not slightly earlier. The initial freezing rain will be light as the main slug of moisture will not have arrived. With that said, it takes just a glaze to make roads very slick and difficult to travel, especially on untreated roads. More robust moisture pushes in around 11pm-12am. Ice will likely accumulate at a bit quicker of a pace at this time, with heaviest accruals (0.10-0.25" storm total) happening throughout eastern/southeastern Iowa. Along with this push of moisture we'll see our temperatures slowly climb. Freezing rain will linger throughout northern portions of the state as well and may so for some time into late Saturday morning in those locations.

SATURDAY MORNING/AFTERNOON
As our temperatures begin to climb we'll see the freezing rain gradually transition to a steady rain from south to north across the state. This process could take a bit as we have been dealing with well below temperatures for a while. The above freezing temperatures will take a bit of time to reach northern half of the state which could lead to prolonged light freezing rain/drizzle through around noon Saturday. This will lead to a prolonged timeframe where roads will be slick and travel could be tricky.

Above freezing temperatures eventually win out as we move through the afternoon, and though we'll likely see an end to the freezing rain, the rain itself will stick around into the late afternoon/early evening especially for the eastern half and southeastern quarter of the state. Rainfall totals in some of these locations could top 1".

If you have travel plans Friday night or Saturday morning PLEASE check the latest forecast and road conditions before you head out and be safe!

WEATHER IMPACT DAY FRIDAY
We've got a busy few days ahead of us featuring some frigid cold, light snow, and then freezing rain. Let's get to the details
THURSDAY
Today's been cold with wind chills largely in the single digits above and below zero with teens below through northern Iowa. Thursday morning will be very similar with single digit wind chills above and below zero with teens below to the north. Much of the day our wind chills won't make it out of the single digits. Plan for cold! And that's not all!
A weak disturbance will bring in a chance for light snow mainly I-80 southward late Thursday morning into the afternoon. Snowfall amounts look to be an inch or less.
FRIDAY
Rain and freezing rain move in by late afternoon/early evening (7pm through early Saturday AM). The precipitation will start as freezing rain with some sleet possible as well, and as temperatures warm through midnight and the early Saturday morning hours we'll see a transition to just rain. There's still some uncertainty with how quickly this transition will happen. A slower transition to above freezing temperatures could mean an increase in expected ice accumulation. These types of details will come into better focus as we get closer. Bottom line, if you have travel plans putting you on the roads Friday night it will likely be very slick.
SATURDAY
Rain will linger for much of the day Saturday, though as temperatures warm into the 40s our chances for freezing rain/ice accumulation will fade early in the day. Again, there is still some uncertainty with respect to how far into Saturday we'll lose that ice potential.

Snow continues to fall across Iowa from a band spanning from Fort Dodge to around Centerville. Snowfall amounts have been light but it's been enough to lead to some slick and snow covered roadways across mainly northern portions of the state. This is a look at Hwy 20 near Fort Dodge. Be safe if you're traveling tonight! We have more snow on the way overnight that will lead to widespread accumulations of under an inch, with some localized areas seeing as much as 1-2" and limited visibility as the winds pick up.
