Steve Morse is an absolute beast, both yesterday and today. Watching this video reminded me how far I have to go—it’s humbling. There’s so much incredible material here, and honestly, it would take months of focused practice to even come close to mastering it. But let’s be real: there’s no other way if you truly want to improve. It’s tough, especially when you’ve been playing for years, but you’ve got to suck it up and push through. The fundamentals are non-negotiable. Looking back, one of my biggest regrets is not dedicating more time to precision and mastering clean tone early on. But the beauty of music is that it’s never too late to start fresh and do it right.

The Guitar Pick Revelation: How a Simple Change Transformed My Playing

For years, I struggled with something I couldn’t quite put my finger on. My chords sounded muddled, my picking felt stiff, and playing guitar wasn’t as fluid or enjoyable as I knew it could be. I was using hard, pointy picks—like so many players do—thinking they were the “right” tool for the job. But no matter how much I practiced or adjusted my technique, there was always something missing.

That all changed recently, and the solution was so simple I almost feel ridiculous for not trying it sooner.

I stumbled across a video mentioning that Eddie Van Halen, the ultimate guitar god himself, used thin picks. Wait, what? Eddie, the guy whose blazing solos and iconic riffs defined generations of guitarists, was using thin picks? It felt counterintuitive. I’d always heard thin picks were for beginners or rhythm strummers—certainly not shredders. But hey, Eddie knew what he was doing, so I figured it was worth a shot.

I grabbed a pack of thin picks and gave them a try.

The Difference Was Immediate

From the very first strum, I noticed a drastic improvement. Chords sounded clearer, less harsh, and more balanced. There was a fluidity in the way the pick moved across the strings. No longer was I fighting against the strings with a stiff, hard pick. Instead, the thin pick flexed effortlessly, letting me focus on the music rather than the mechanics.

Even more surprising was how it forced me to adjust my playing style. With a thinner pick, you can’t bulldoze through the strings like a sledgehammer. You have to lighten your touch. This change wasn’t just physical—it became a mental shift as well. My playing suddenly felt more intentional, more nuanced. And as I started using a softer attack, my tone improved naturally.

The Eddie Effect

It’s funny how something as small as a pick can have such a big impact on your playing. Eddie Van Halen wasn’t just a master of tone and technique—he understood the importance of every detail, including the pick he used. For him, the thin pick wasn’t just a tool; it was a part of his unique style. And for me, it’s become a revelation.

Now, I get it: everyone’s preferences are different. There are plenty of players who swear by heavy picks for speed, precision, or a harder attack. But for me, switching to a thin pick unlocked something I didn’t even know was missing. It’s proof that experimenting with small changes can have a huge impact.

What I Learned
1. The Right Pick Can Transform Your Playing
Whether you’re strumming chords, picking leads, or doing a bit of both, the thickness and flexibility of your pick play a massive role in how you sound and feel while playing.
2. Thin Picks Encourage a Lighter Touch
This was the most unexpected part of the experience. By forcing me to ease up, the pick taught me how to approach the strings with more finesse. My dynamics improved, and so did my tone.
3. There’s No “One-Size-Fits-All”
Every guitarist has their own style and preferences, and the best tool is the one that works for you. Don’t be afraid to try something that seems unconventional or out of your comfort zone.

My Advice to You

If you’ve been feeling stuck, struggling with tone, or just looking for something new to inspire your playing, experiment with your pick. Thin, thick, rounded, sharp, nylon, Tortex—there’s an endless variety to choose from. It might seem like a small change, but sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference.

For me, it wasn’t just about discovering thin picks—it was about rediscovering the joy of playing guitar.

So, if you’re still searching for that missing piece, take a cue from Eddie and give those thin picks a shot. You might just find your own guitar revelation.
