The New York Times just dropped its latest version of "36 Hours in Denver," and as guides go, this one is pretty good. But then, it's written by Steve Knopper, a writer who lives in the area. According to @cuboulder students, @deionsanders IS brat. Let’s define. brat: referring to the @charli_xcx 2024 album, brat, the word has become a way to describe someone who embraces their flaws and exudes confidence. Charlie XCX specifically defines it as “you’re just like that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and like maybe says some dumb things sometimes. Who like feels herself but maybe also has a breakdown. But kind of like parties through it, is very honest, very blunt. A little bit volatile. Like, does dumb things. But it’s brat.” Demure: Another Gen Z term coming down the pipeline. Often used in the phrase “very mindful, very demure.” Demure is someone who behaves modestly and politely. (Westword does not claim that Deion is or is not demure). When Gen Z refers to an adult as brat, it’s typically a high compliment. Residents facing eviction from a neglected apartment complex at 1568 Nome Street in Aurora are upset that the city is forcing them out with no place to go. Aurora city officials say they’re closing the apartment building after months of trying to get the owner to fix code violations. But the owner says police have failed to crack down on violence and gang activity. Venezuelan migrants and other residents at the apartment complex say they’re unfairly caught in the middle. “It doesn’t seem fair to me,” says Norena Ordoñez, a Venezuelan migrant who has been living at the apartments for a year and a half. “The government should know that the people who have been here for more than a year or two — there are some who have been here for five or ten years — those people should have a limited time to be able to leave, to save up, to see what kind of solutions come up.” ✍️ Read the full story by Bennito L. Starting next year, many health insurance carriers in Colorado must pay for abortion coverage without deductibles, copays or co-insurance — and recent federal guidance just expanded that requirement. State legislators passed Senate Bill 23-189 in 2023, which requires health insurance carriers that serve large employers (those with more than 100 employees) to cover the total cost of abortion care beginning in 2025. Under the bill, health insurance for the small group and individual market would provide abortion coverage depending on how it would affect premiums, with the state having to defray extra costs if the coverage had the potential to increase premiums. However, on Tuesday, July 23, the Colorado Division of Insurance announced that it received federal confirmation that premiums will not increase and defrayal is not needed. According to the CDI, the state can require individual and small group insurance plans to provide the same coverage for abortion care as large employer plans. ✍️ Read the full story by @hannahmetzgermedia at westword.com or at the link in our bio. #denver #colorado #coloradohealthcare #coloradohealth #denvernews #denvercolorado #copolitics
@oliviarodrigo brought her Guts World Tour to Denver on July 30, packing @ballarenadenver with young girls adorned in sparkly purple skirts, fishnet tights and butterfly accessories. The Ball Arena concert was a celebration of Rodrigo and her success in less than five years of releasing music outside of Disney, and paid homage to the fans who have made it possible. While she’s no Taylor Swift, her fans are cut from the same cloth. Mayor Mike Johnston was inaugurated on July 17, 2023. Let’s take a look at everything that’s happened since. Read a full, in-depth timeline by Bennito L. Kelty at westword.com. #mikejohnston #denver #denvermayor #stateofthecity #denverco #house1000 #mayormikejohnston #milehighcity
Mayor Mike Johnston continued his promise of making Denver “America’s best city” and “the economic engine of the West” during his State of the City speech today, July 22, at the Paramount Theater. Johnston, who marked his one-year anniversary as mayor on Wednesday, July 17, boasted of efforts to solve homelessness and the migrant crisis while also making Denver more affordable and vibrant by his next state of the city. He opened his speech by talking about the first homeless encampment he visited as mayor. That encampment would later be the first one swept under Johnston’s administration, before he was able to open housing units at hotels. He started his time in office by promising to move 1,000 people indoors by the end of 2023, a goal he accomplished by his own standards. During his speech, Johnston touted that he solved the issue by moving more than 1,800 people indoors, including 1,600 people who are still living at hotels that we converted into shelters, in micro-communities, in their own leased units or with families. ✍️ Read the full story on Johnston’s speech by Bennito L.
