Many cool tricks can be used to get a full, "finished" sound on acoustic albums. Doubling of guitars and vocals. Multiband compression to ensure that guitars are full and thick and not too "crispy." And finally...use of multiple mics, eqs, and compressors on the vocalist to ensure that the vocal is big and full.

It is very hard to get the "right" sound with just acoustic and vocal...and one can drive themselves crazy trying.

Big news...Rocky Mountain Portable Studios is no longer portable...it is now in a 1200 sq foot basement. And it is free! That is right...free. Like our favorite band Radiohead's albums, you can name your price. Or you can give us a someday maybe IOU. Or you can just be an awesome cool person and hang out and record some stuff. We don't really care.

I don't do music for the money, obviously. They say "the best way to make a small fortune in audio is to start with a big one." I have a full-time job, and music is my release. I would like to find some cool acts and let them do their thing, with me engineering and producing, but with the artist taking much of the reigns. For me, it is about finding the right artist.

Big news for RMPS fans. We now have an actual STUDIO. So we can do the portable thing and record you in your space, or you can swing by the studio and patch up those vocals.

In spite of being a home-brew situation, we are starting to achieve pro studio results for a fraction of the price. The key is, we find top of the line equipment that might be slightly out of favor, purchase it at great prices, then customize the circuits to remove any weak links.

The other way we give the pro studio sound for less, and in some ways BEAT the pro studios, is that we let you work alone, off the clock. Oftentimes an engineer can set you up for the best sound, then leave you alone for hours, or even days. We know you want more time and less pressure. Don't get me wrong, I love pro studios. But for new artists really trying to get something off the ground, every dollar counts.

Some would say "you can do it yourself for free." This is true. But if you want to think about your music and not have to spend a month researching compressor attack times, it makes sense to let a pro do it. Let me tell you, the more time you spend researching compressor attack times, the more you will become disconnected from the most important part of music: the performance!

Please feel free to post comments and feedback for us. The sole purpose of RMPS is to make professional recording and mastering an affordable, rewarding, and fun process. So often we go into the studio and spend thousands only to find that somewhere in the stress and the price and the distraction of k***s and cables, we have lost all the magic. And it doesn't help that many engineers care more about their oxygen-free cable than they do about your comfort and creative process.

Even though we can't really do much right now, there are many things we can do. For example, Andrew could set up some mics and preamps, throw out some acoustic foam, and let you track that old song about your high school girlfriend while we mix and master it from our house. If you want to record a band, we can drop the stuff off on your porch and guide you from a remote location. By nature, multitrack recording is made for Covid: make music with people without being with people.

So whether you are the next Led Zeppelin or you just want to help grandma capture her banjo playing skills, let's make some music! The world needs more beauty right now.
