I'm a big fan of having fun in your business. Yes, I want your digital copywriting business to offer you financial security and scheduling freedom, but I also want you to be excited about the work you're doing.

One way to be sure that happens is to think about who you want to work with, not just in terms on industry or company, but actual people.

A few questions to help you dig deeper into defining your ideal client are:
✅ Do you want to work with someone who knows what they need or who needs your help to figure that out?
✅ What is the vibe you'd like your clients to have? Try writing down three adjectives that you'd like your clients to embody.
✅ How do they talk about projects? Are they excited and expansive, and do you like that? Or are they reserved and down-to-business, and do you like that?

Answer these questions and then next time you're on a discovery call, think about how much you'll enjoy working with the person on the other end of the line.

One of the best ways to make connections in your industry is to get in the room with them. And a great way to do that is to attend a live event. Even a virtual event can give you a chance to connect with people through comment streams and associated social media groups.

If attending a live event feels a little steep in terms of budget, look at what's happening locally and then see if you can volunteer. In that case, your fee will usually be waived, and you'll still have plenty of opportunities to hold conversations with the people you're hoping to write for.

What if you’re super busy with client work? Does that mean you don’t have time to market yourself?

It’s smart to keep up with your marketing even when you feel swamped with client projects. That way you always have new projects coming your way.

To make this work, make a list of different types of marketing tasks you can do in 30 minutes, 10 minutes, or event just five minutes.

Have you thought about building an audience for yourself? There are a ton of good reasons to do it.

And there are ways to do it that don’t take a huge amount of time or money. What they do take is a little time, every day, on most days.

For example, you can build your audience by making thoughtful comments on LinkedIn posts.

For this to work, you need to follow people who are already attracting the audience you want to reach.

And then you need to watch for posts that are generating a lot of response.

Make a thoughtful, helpful comment. Seriously… write a paragraph or two or three. It takes time, but this is a quality of over quantity equation.

Finally, when people respond to your comments, answer back, and also send them a connection request.
