Enjoy fine art

As a lover of fine art, it was such a pleasure to read the report by Mark Zimmaro on the partial rescue of a once-doomed mural by Philadelphia Magic Gardens ("Magic Gardens displaying Zagar mural masterpiece," Jan. 8).

Basically, a special team of art preservationists rescued parts of a 7,000-square-foot exterior mural by artist Isaiah Zagar at the former Painted Bride Art Center on Vine Street. The recovered pieces will now be on display indoors at Philadelphia Magic Gardens at 1020 South St. from Jan. 17 to March 23. They are naming the exhibit "Lost Landscapes: The Skin of the Bride."

Obviously a great deal of effort and expense went into preserving this unique outdoor work of art. According to Zimmaro, it took five years of appeals to obtain the right to rescue at least part of Zagar's original mural. What a tragic waste it would have been if this masterpiece were completely lost once the Painted Bride building is demolished.

Absolute Joy is an energetic, 1-year-old German Shepherd mix who is the definition of pure happiness. With her sweet personality and big bark, she’s a softy at heart who just wants to be your best friend. Absolute Joy is always thrilled to see you, and though she's working on her manners (she might jump for joy when she greets you), it’s just because she can’t contain her excitement. Absolute Joy is an enthusiastic chewer who loves her chew toys, especially when they come with tasty treats. Absolute Joy has a playful side, and although she’s not into fetch, she’s always ready to run around and have a blast outside. She’s a natural adventurer and would be the perfect hiking companion. Nature is her happy place, and she’s always up for exploring new trails with you. And if you’ve got a box around, watch out – Absolute Joy hasn’t met one she can’t tear apart.

Roxanna is a 4-year-old, 80-pound pit bull mix with a heart as big as her goofy personality. Rescued just in time from being euthanized at a shelter, this peach-fuzzed beauty is ready to find her forever home.

Roxanna is full of energy and would love an active family who enjoys daily walks, hikes or backyard zoomies. She’s a certified snuggle expert, perfect for keeping you warm during those chilly nights.

Roxanna has a soft spot for squeaky toys and will happily pull out her whole collection for a play session.

Roxanna is making great strides with house training, leash manners and even crate time (up to three hours like a champ). She has happily played with both male and female dog foster siblings. With a little patience and another dog to show her the ropes, she’ll thrive in her social skills.

Roxanna needs a family with kids 15-plus who can guide her puppy-like tendencies (she’s still learning not to get mouthy during play).

The city Department of Public Health recently reached its ambitious goal of distributing 1 million free condoms to Philadelphians in 2024. Since Jan. 1, condoms have been given out through Take Control Philly, the department’s distribution plan that includes online ordering and delivery by mail, grassroots efforts at events and support by community partners and teams at city health centers and Department of Public Health resource hubs. Charles Gregory Postell, Communications and Policy Coordinator for the Department of Public Health, ceremoniously presented the 1 millionth condom on Dec. 19 to Philadelphia Health Center 1, 1930 S. Broad St., as part of its biweekly condom order.

Focused on free condom distribution and sexual-wellness education, Take Control Philly aims to lower the rate of sexually transmitted diseases among Philadelphia youth ages 13 to 19.

Families recently enjoyed a joyful day of sunshine, food and ice skating at the Independence Blue Cross River Rink, 101 S. Columbus Blvd., where Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia awarded scholarships to help fund their children’s private education.

The Dec. 8 event brought exciting news to many parents.

“I was overwhelmed with emotion,” said Kenya Epps, upon learning that her 4-year-old daughter, Ladybug, had received a scholarship to attend Jubilee School, in West Philadelphia.

Ladybug is excited to start kindergarten at Jubilee next year.

“This experience will take her so far, and she is so deserving of it,” Epps said.

CSFP provides need-based scholarships through a lottery system to help families cover tuition for kindergarten through eighth grade, supporting up to three children per household.
