Following a recent report from CBS News stating that Philadelphia is spending $2 million a year cleaning up illegal dumping, Democratic district attorney challenger Pat Dugan unveiled his enforcement plan to go after the criminals who trash the city and the businesses that enable them.

Dugan faces District Attorney Larry Krasner in the primary.

“For too long, the DA’s office has made excuses instead of enforcing the law. No more. If you dump in our city, you will pay — one way or another,” Dugan said. “Philadelphia needs a DA who fights for our neighborhoods — not for headlines. Every Philadelphian deserves safe, clean streets and a justice system that actually enforces the law.”

Dugan’s plan includes:

• Prosecuting the companies that create the waste, not just the ones caught dumping it.

• Imposing the highest financial penalties allowed by law, making it more expensive to dump illegally than to dispose of waste properly.

I'm a snow lover. But with such a blustery, cold winter, it was time to see some blooms. It was time to go to the Philadelphia Flower Show. In its 196th year, the show's theme is “Gardens of Tomorrow.” We all need the healing power of nature, and gardening is one way to achieve this. “Every act of gardening is an act of hope,” the show's guidebook reminds us. The show is being held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, where hope abounds, until March 9.

Immediately upon entering the show there is a Butterflies Live! exhibit, a Kid's Cocoon and even a Lego construction exhibit on loan from the Franklin Institute. Venture down the hall a bit farther and you find the Game Commission along with many other tourism sponsors, mainly from New Jersey, upstate Pennsylvania and New York. Everyone's giving away tchotchkes and salt water taffy, so bring along a bag, or if you prefer, snag one from one of these vendors.

Giovanni is a 2-year-old, 10-pound Chihuahua/Fox Terrier mix with a heart as big as his ears. This little guy is full of energy but even fuller of love. His absolute favorite place to be? Curled up in his person’s lap, wrapped in a cozy blanket.

He loves to snuggle and be close to his people, enjoys playing fetch and chewing on toys, is house trained and pee-pad trained when on a schedule, dog friendly with slow introductions and is smart, attentive and loving — but needs patience in new situations.

His ideal home would include a similar-sized or larger dog who loves to play, a backyard to zoom around in and a family willing to give him time to adjust and help build his confidence.

Giovanni is neutered, vaccinated, heartworm negative and microchipped. If you’re looking for a loyal, loving companion who will happily keep your lap warm, Giovanni is your guy. Email [email protected] for more information. ••

The Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame owns the world’s largest museum collection dedicated to Philadelphia sports. The collection spans the history of Philadelphia sports dating to the late 1800s. Parts of the collection are available to the public in permanent and rotating exhibits at the hall’s museum preview gallery at Spike’s Trophies (2701 Grant Ave.).

A cornerstone display is dedicated to the Philadelphia Eagles’ four NFL championships: 1948, 1949, 1960 and the 2017 Super Bowl team. These champions are also honored on murals on sides of Spike’s building. The 1948, 1949 and 1960 are featured on the City of Champions Mural. On the building’s east façade, it was dedicated in 2016 in conjunction with Mural Arts Philadelphia. Following the Eagles winning Super Bowl LII the Hall of Fame and Spike’s again worked with Mural Arts. A new mural was commissioned and created on the west-facing wall, dedicated to those Super Bowl champions .

Jason Duff was interviewed by Jill Horner for Comcast Newsmakers.

Jason Duff, a licensed clinical psychologist in the U.S. Navy, was diagnosed with lymphoma in May 2017 after feeling a lump in his neck and throat area, but he was lucky.

The cancer had not metastasized, and he had a skilled surgeon and support from his wife.

After chemotherapy, radiation and surgeries at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, he received a clean bill of health later that year, and has been cancer free ever since.

He worked and exercised during the illness, and today remains an advocate for early detection.

“I had a young family and beautiful wife, and we had plans,” he recalled. “I was focused, energized and motivated to take this on. I didn’t want to die. I had really good care.”
