The Medford Methodist Church was filled with Christmas cheer last month as three members of Girl Scout Troop 24205 led an innovative mini-theater camp they dubbed a "holiday spectacular."

Amelia Finley, Giana Silcox and Anna Smith - all senior-level Girl Scouts and high-school sophomores - dedicated four weeks to mentoring and inspiring a group of 11 younger girls, teaching them the art of performance and sharing holiday cheer.

The camp was a whirlwind of creativity and camaraderie that offered participants the opportunity to learn a short repertoire of holiday hits - including "Jingle Bells" and "Frosty the Snowman" - as well as skits. Each young performer was encouraged to step outside her comfort zone and express herself through public speaking, singing and stage presence.

Triple win

Not one, not two, but three Shawnee High School sports teams have won state titles this fall, setting and breaking records in the process.

The girls tennis team and boys and girls soccer teams were cited for their Group III championships at Shawnee’s annual turkey trot on Nov. 27. The tennis team was the first to take home a title. Coached by math teacher Sarah Doyle, the players won their final match against West Windsor-Plainsboro North High School on Oct. 17 with a score of 3-2.

A great horned owl that was injured after her toe and ankle got stuck in a suet bird feeder in Washington Township in October has been released back into the wild after treatment at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Hospital at Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge in Medford Township.

The wildlife refuge showed footage of her release on its page on Dec. 20.

"We suspect that she was hunting something that was eating at the feeder and got her toe stuck," noted the post. "The suet feeder was hanging from a wire, and as she struggled to escape, the wire got wound around her ankle. Both her toe and her ankle had lacerations from the entanglement.
