The American Red Cross needs the help of New Jerseyans. There is great need for blood and platelet donations during January, National Blood Donor Month.

"Currently, the nation faces the lowest number of people giving blood in 20 years," said Kim Goetz, executive director of the American Red Cross of Central New Jersey. "And when fewer people donate blood, even small disruptions to blood donations – like recent winter weather systems – can have a huge effect on the availability of blood products and dramatic consequences for those in need of emergency blood transfusion."

Winter, a time when weather can be a factor in traveling to donate blood, coupled with cold and flu season that keeps people at home, poses a challenge to blood donations. Central New Jersey is home to the Llura Gund Central New Jersey Headquarters and Blood Donation Center in Princeton.

The Bordentown City Board of Commissioners held its first monthly meeting of the year.

Heather Cheesman was sworn in to another term as commissioner by State Sen. Troy Singleton at the meeting on Jan. 13.

Cheesman had won a seat through an uncontested special election in November. She was serving as interim commissioner and director of public safety and affairs after filling a vacancy in March 2024. She previously served on the board from 2009 to 2013 and had served as deputy mayor and director of revenue and finance.

During commissioner reports, Mayor Jennifer Sciortino touched upon the "Open Space, Recreation, and Historic Preservation Program."

Voters came out to the polls and approved the measure in the November election.

"It requires a lot of planning for implementation and we want to have that ready this year," Sciortino said, adding there will be a number of stakeholder and public meetings for public input.

The bald eagle and osprey have been removed from the state's list of endangered species.

This has been a culmination of more than 40 years of work to restore these iconic birds to New Jersey's landscape, Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette said.

The Murphy Administration adopted regulatory changes on Jan. 6. The delisting of eagles and ospreys is contained within a Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) as a rule through publication in the New Jersey Register. The adopted rule makes more than 100 additions, deletions and conservation status updates. The status of the bald eagle has changed from endangered to special concern, and the osprey from threatened to stable.

Palmyra's big news in 1834 was the Camden and Amboy Railroad's construction of a train station at Broad Street and Cinnaminson Avenue that brought together individuals and businesses in an area of several large farms and very few people.

Then part of Chester Township, the borough along the Delaware River began as Texas, a small railroad junction. Entrepreneur Joseph Souder figured the railroad would transform the town, so he purchased land and mapped out streets and property lots. In 1849, he and other interested investors renamed the village Palmyra, after the ancient trading center in Syria.

The people came and the town grew quickly, along with others along the railroad, including Riverton, Cinnaminson, Riverside and Delanco.

By the 1960s, only freight trains used the tracks to carry goods to industries from Trenton to Camden, and on weekend nights, "the tracks" became a gathering place for teenagers.

Woodlin Lodge Mural

The faces on the mural at the Woodlin Lodge No. 30 tell that of a storied African American history in Bordentown City.

For Leon Stanley, founder of Bordentown Arts, learning of the history has been quite an experience.

The mural project began when Stanley approached John Piercy of the Lodge about the possibility of a mural in Aug. 2022.

"I knew nothing about the lodge," Stanley admitted.

But once Piercy and the Brothers of Woodlin Lodge No.
