The Bordentown Regional School District is facing another difficult budget season, according to School interim Superintendent Edward Forsthoffer.

With that, the district has been floating around a number of program changes since the budget process began last year. Some are off the table as of the introduction of the tentative 2025-26 budget in March, but some are still essentially floating.

A public hearing and final adoption of the $53.3 million spending plan is scheduled in May.

School taxes are one item on a property owner’s total tax bill, which also includes municipal taxes from Bordentown Township, Bordentown City and Fieldsboro, and Burlington County taxes.

The main drivers of the budget continue to be regular programs - instruction at $10.82 million, with a proposed reduction of $1.88 million from last school year, and total special education - instruction at $2.65 million, with a proposed reduction of $1.97 million.

The New Jersey AI Hub has been officially opened as a regional place for artificial intelligence (AI) startups to emerge and the advancement of AI innovation research.

Representatives of the hub's founding partners - Princeton University, the state, Microsoft, and CoreWeave - gathered together to cut the ribbon on the new hub located in university space within West Windsor Township on March 27.

In December 2023, state officials and the university announced a partnership to create and develop an artificial intelligence hub in Central Jersey for the advancement and exploration of AI.

The new regional hub not only includes companies, industry leaders and startups, but other New Jersey education institutions such as Rutgers University and community colleges to further drive collaboration and research.

"Today we are here to celebrate the manifestation of that vision as it comes to life," Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber said.

Bordentown City has moved their municipal elections from May to November.

Nearly 70%, or 1,839 voters, came out to the polls and voted on whether or not to move the elections with 1,256 "yes" votes and 583 "no" votes.

Mayor Jennifer Sciortino said the question during the general election allowed them to really "gauge" how the voters felt.

The commissioner election will remain nonpartisan as a special election.

"It won't be in the columns with whoever is on the ballot at the time," Sciortino said, adding the commissioner election will be held during gubernatorial election years.

Some residents at the meeting relayed concerns about the commissioner election getting lost and not being "as personal" as the May election.

Commissioner Heather Cheesman said with the board of education election being in November, she was always conditioned to vote in November. She noted people are more likely to have off of work in November.

"It makes sense to move forward to November," she said.

Attention to heart health is the goal of the annual American Heart Awareness Month in February, with its focus on raising awareness and promoting healthy lifestyles.

One in five deaths each year is the result of heart disease, according to "2025 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics: A Report of U.S. and Global Data from the American Heart Association," an article published in Circulation, the association's scientific journal. The problem is anticipated to worsen in the next 25 years.

Heart disease, noted Dr. Brett A. Sealove, chief of cardiology at Hackensack Meridian Jersey Shore University Medical Center, is the number one killer in the western world.

"American Heart Awareness Month is a time to promote prevention, screening and awareness to empower patients," he said.

As the city "just keeps getting busier and busier," it has become apparent that the administrator/CFO position has become "too hectic" for one person, Mayor Jennifer Sciortino relayed at a regular commissioner meeting on Feb. 10.

That is why the one-square mile city - population 4,000 - is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time experienced administrator to oversee daily municipal operations and manage approximately 45 full-time employees throughout four departments, including the city-owned and operated water utility.

"Peg (Margaret M. Peak) has worked her butt off for the last four years consistently," Sciortino said, noting despite the job load, she made sure she got the job done at the end of the day. "The CFO/finance is her strong suit, and she will take over that solely. We will do an executive search for a new administrator.

The Philadelphia Eagles are headed to Super Bowl LIX and fans are invited to the Burlington County Animal Shelter for a special pregame pup rally on the day of the big game.

The animal shelter is partnering with the Friends of the Burlington County Animal Shelter to host the second annual “Tail”-gate open house on Sunday, Feb. 9 from noon to 4 p.m. It's an event that enables visitors to meet dogs and cats available for adoption or fostering. As an incentive, adoption fees have been waived in the past week up to the big game.

The event will also include music, snacks, the shelter’s version of a training camp obstacle course and other football and animal-themed games and activities. Visitors can also watch part of the Discovery Channel’s Puppy Bowl at 2 p.m.

“Super Bowl Sunday is a special occasion for families and friends to get together, and we’re looking to make it extra special by connecting people to our shelter’s champion pets,” said county Commissioner Tyler J.

The recent sweeping crackdown of a diesel fuel theft crime ring is just an example of the police work that Bordentown Township police officers were working on in the latter months of 2023 and through 2024.

Gas stations within Bordentown Township were victimized by suspects placing credit card "skimming" devices on their pumps, the department shared in a post on its page.

"These incidents were investigated by the police department and additional surveillance methods led to the discovery of involved individuals that operated as a part of an organized crime ring," the post stated.

"Bordentown officers also responded to a number of reports from refueling stations that led to the seizure of vehicles from suspects whom had returned to the area with 'cloned' credit cards to steal fuel from unsuspecting stations.
