As we come to the end of 2024 and look forward to the new year, here’s a look back at the top three stories in Cinnaminson.

Counting cigarette butts

For James Alturo, it started with a challenge: How many cigarette butts would he pick up from last winter in 2022 through the end of 2023 along Route 130 and Branch Pike?

“My goal was 15,000,” the former Palmyra resident and retiree said in early 2024 about the counting. “I figured that’s a lot. I started in February with only 11 months. It’s 1,000 a month.”

For the count – fittingly dubbed Jim’s Cigarette Butt Challenge – Alturo decided to donate 1 cent for every cigarette butt collected to the American Lung Association.

Albert J. Countryman Jr./The Sun A young man rides his bicycle during the holiday break from school while a passenger in the background waits for the next train at the River Line’s Palmyra station on the day after Christmas.

Palmyra's big news in 1834 was the Camden and Amboy Railroad's construction of a train station at Broad Street and Cinnaminson Avenue that brought together individuals and businesses in an area of several large farms and very few people.

Then part of Chester Township, the borough along the Delaware River began as Texas, a small railroad junction. Entrepreneur Joseph Souder figured the railroad would transform the town, so he purchased land and mapped out streets and property lots. In 1849, he and other interested investors renamed the village Palmyra, after the ancient trading center in Syria.

The people came and the town grew quickly, along with others along the railroad, including Riverton, Cinnaminson, Riverside and Delanco.

Home ownership is a hopeful dream for many struggling families, especially with the high monthly cost of renting an apartment and high interest rates on mortgages.

Thanks to the efforts of Habitat for Humanity of South Central Jersey (SCNJ), that dream has come true for 385 people in Burlington, Camden, Mercer and Atlantic counties, as well as portions of Middlesex, over the past 38 years.

On Nov. 22, SCNJ broke ground on a new affordable-housing development on Belleview Avenue in Cinnaminson, marking the beginning of construction for six new homes. Three short weeks later, on Dec. 13, the new modular homes were placed on foundations.

"These are pre-fabricated modular homes we have been using for the past six years.
