Photos courtesy of Kim Brown Steve Brown, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2016, celebrates a recent birthday with the whole family.

Steve and Kim Brown’s love story begins at the back seat of a school bus on the way to the Burlington County Institute of Technology (BCIT).

“We ended up sharing it,” Kim recalled with a laugh.

Kim had just moved to Southampton with her family from Marlton and was attending BCIT with a focus on graphic design. Steve grew up in Mount Laurel and also attended BCIT to focus on auto body.

They began dating after Steve decided to yell out that bus window.

"I was telling a friend that Rob had asked me out today,” Kim remembered. "He was yelling to tell him that we were together. I started laughing. He was yelling.

"He was serious."

It was junior year of high school - and that was it.

Courtesy of Monroe Township Brian Cope was sworn in as a Ward 3 councilman. He previously served as director of parks and recreation for the township.

The Monroe Township Council has reorganized with some familiar and new faces.

During council's reorganization meeting on Jan. 6, Albert "Al" Rossi was sworn in as Ward 1 councilman; Carolann Fox as Ward 2 councilwoman; Brian Cope as Ward 3 councilman; and John Valentine, the lone Republican on the dais, as Ward 4 councilman.

Rossi, Cope and Valentine are beginning their first four-year terms, while Fox is starting her second. The meeting also saw Councilman Donald Heverly appointed president and Denise Adams vice president.

Heverly thanked his fellow council members for having faith in him to head council.

"I promise I won’t let you down," he said. "It’s not a position I take lightly.

When military veterans return home after serving overseas or statewide, they can often have trouble re-adjusting to society, and a journey to a college degree or a new career can be daunting.

"My personal experience was being handed my discharge paperwork and my commanding officer thanking me for my service," recalled John Ryder, director of Student Affairs and Military Services at the Rowan College of South Jersey (RCSJ). "Nobody tells you what your benefits are when you discharge.

"My office is that conduit for these service members coming to RCSJ," he added.
