In celebration of Pride Month, the Scroll takes a look back at the archives. While it is important to rejoice in the June festivities, we also recognize that more work needs to be done. We hope this post highlights both the progress and the problems in the community by touching upon topics such as the “Coming Out Day” (which no longer exists today), the showcasing of the controversial play “The Laramie Project,” and the evolution of the “Gay Straight Alliance” (now known as the Gender Sexuality Alliance). Kristin Drouin ’08 was presented the 2022 Ashley Award at School Meeting on Wednesday, April 27.

Named in honor of Tom Ashley, class of 1911, “The Ashley Award is presented each year to an alumus/a who graduated from Deerfield less than 20 years ago and demonstrates Tom Ashley’s exemplary character and extraordinary devotion to a people, cause, or place through unwavering volunteer service or through work in a field of philanthropic activity.”

A licensed clinical social worker and therapist with advanced training in palliative care, hospice and bereavement, Drouin has supported hundreds of patients with chronic or life limiting illnesses over the past twelve years.

Currently serving at Boston Children’s Hospital working with patients undergoing bone marrow transplants and their families, Drouin’s message to students is to “Lean into what scares you; Own your imperfections; Find your fun; Show up for others and ask them to show up for you.”

When asked what advice she would give to her younger Deerfield self, Drouin replied, “Remember that there's a world outside the [Deerfield] bubble, and what happens here matters, but [it] is not going to make or break you.”
