“Now that’s the REAL McCoy”

Yesterday was both a great community gathering and a history lesson for me as we helped save Pinewood Cemetery.

Over 1700 souls are buried there and it’s been around for 152 years, 2 years older than the City. Some of the people that helped shape and even name Daytona are there. Including Mr. Dunn, ya as in the road you’ve driven down so many times, “Dunn Avenue,“ along with our first Mayor and Police Chief.

As is “The Real McCoy.”
We’re all familiar with that saying. Well Mr. William McCoy was a bootlegger during prohibition way back in the day. While others who sold alcohol were watering their stash down, Mr. McCoy vowed to never water down his.

That’s why when people took a sip of his alcohol they’d say, “Now that’s the Real McCoy!”

I felt so honoured to take a picture next to Mr. McCoy’s family grave site.

When I left you after Friday's show, I mentioned that yesterday, Sunday, I'd be doing a first in my radio career, a live broadcast from a cemetery. Driving to Pinewood yesterday for our "Save The Cemetery" event, I thought, maybe we'd have a couple dozen volunteers helping us to restore it. That would have been nice.

Boy, was I ever way off! Hundreds of residents, some as far as Ocala, along with so many wonderful businesses all showed up to volunteer their time and do something great for our historic cemetery, Pinewood on Main Street, across from Main Street Station and the Boot Hill Saloon. I can not express how much gratitude and thanks I have for each and everyone of you who helped us yesterday.

Residents brought out w**d eaters, leaf blowers, saws, rakes, shovels, cleaning supplies and more and everyone did what they could. Businesses like tree services, landscapers, headstone restoration all showed up to lend a hand and restore this final resting place. I don't have all of their business cards, but would ask you to keep these places in mind if you ever need their services. All volunteering their time on their day off to help our community. I've attached a photo of the cards.

I'd like to thank Heavy and Christine from Midwest Motorcycles for being the inspiration and catalyst behind this Save The Cemetery community event. The first person I ran into when I walked into the grounds of Pinewood was a gentleman that was sweating bullets, and hard at work with a shovel and rake. That was Michael Politis from Politis and Matovina. Michael and all of our volunteers helped clean up Pinewood. Truck load after truck load of branches of tree limbs, debris, were constantly being taken out.

Several people were cleaning and polishing these long forgotten headstones. Again, everyone did what they could. I am just so impressed and joyful to see how our community came together to help.

Heavy, from Midwest, had originally said he'd like to see this restored by July 4th. I can safely say, thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers, that we are way, way ahead of schedule.

God bless everyone for donating their time and effort to help us save Pinewood Cemetery.
All I keep picturing is the next time a friend or family member goes to pay their respects to their loved ones buried there is how impressed and happy they'll be so see Pinewood looking, as it should, so respectful and cleaned up.

A million thanks, and we salute you and your kindness!
