Our Canadian brother had an accident recently while out fishing. Glad he’s still with us. We hope to get him back on our show to talk about it. I know upon hearing about it, it has made me more aware of my surroundings while on the water. A lot of lessons to be learned here!
This is my last smallmouth of 2024 sadly. On the morning of Oct.12th, I set out on a river float down a new stretch in upstate New York. The morning was one I will never forget, and I was the only one out there for miles. What I didn’t know was, while wading the river, everything was about to change with a life-altering accident being struck by a 40’ ash tree that was 18” in diameter at the top of my head. What transpired left me face down unconscious, submerged underneath this ash tree in 18” of water. I awoke pinned to the river as it rushed passed me. Finally getting myself out from under the tree, I stumbled to the shore. Unable to process what had just transpired. I sat on the bank unable to lift my left arm, my head pouring out blood, nor able to turn my neck. I knew I had to get back down the river 30 minutes in my kayak to the launch. Mentally talking to myself that I could make it back without losing conciseness due to blood loss from my head laceration. I made it back to the launch to find out I was the only one there. So I took all my energy and bought my car and trailer and loaded everything as fast as I could with my right arm. Finally, in the driver’s seat heading back to Canada, I called my wife and asked her to meet me at the Canadian border and that I needed medical attention. I made it back to the border and awaited emergency personnel and transportation. This accident led to a broken left scapula, several compression fractures in my thoracic spine and a large laceration to my head. Not to mention the severe concussion I was left to battle. I’ve spent the past weeks putting myself back together. It’s been a long road of recovery and starting rehabilitation for my injuries.
I am forever grateful to still be here 🙏
This is a brief account of my river fishing accident. In the coming weeks, I will join The River Run Podcast to share the complete events of that day.
