Plant highlight: NINEBARK

Ninebark is a fantastic native shrub that blooms in mid-late spring. It has a weeping habit and is covered in clusters of small flowers. It’s a host species for several pollinators! Plant alone as a statement plant or together to form a hedgerow. Very easy to grow, full sun or part shade and can handle a variety of soil conditions, deer and rabbit resistant! I have green and red varieties available at the stand now for only $6!

Plant highlight! DAPPLED WILLOW

Dappled willow also known as Tri-colored willow is an incredibly easy to grow perennial. Throughout the spring and early summer it has gorgeous pink, white and green foliage! Despite being eaten alive by deer and rabbits in my back field this gorgeous and resilient shrub is still thriving! Plant alone as a statement piece or close together form a hedge row.

My page has been quiet for awhile, but I’m still here and getting ready for spring! As some of you already know, we added to our family in a big way last spring by gaining custody of my niece and nephew. It’s been a blessing beyond all measure but I never could have anticipated how much change would happen and how quickly. Some things shifted, some were given up and some needed adjusting. Social media for me, was one area that needed adjusted.

Nevertheless, I’m still here, still growing and finding a way to use this page in a better way!

As spring returns, we’ve got elderberry cuttings available again!

My supply will be very limited this year so get them while to can!

They are sold in bundles of 10 cuttings for $20, shipping is $8 and I’ll include an easy to follow planting guide!

It’s the third week of May! Here’s what I’m working on this week in zone 6:

🌱 The bulk of the vegetable garden has been planted but there’s still a few plants that didn’t quite make it in, I’m getting creative and finding spots to fit everything.
🌼 companion planting! I’m tucking calendula and marigolds around the garden and adding herbs around vulnerable plants to help deter pests.
🐛 keep an eye out for pests! They’re already out there! I’ve started picking of cucumber beetles and had to treat a few plants for aphids

The rain has finally stopped, it’s a great day to shop for some excellent plants :)

This week in the garden: May 1st 2023

It’s the first week of May! The forecast here only shows a couple of cool nights ahead, here are a few things to work on while waiting for the green light on all those warm weather things!

🥬 direct-sow another round of cold weather crops. Lettuce, peas, spinach and more can be succession planted now to extend your harvest!
🌱 the first weeds are starting to emerge and so are early pests! Handling these issues early will help prevent them from becoming bigger problems later in the season.
🌲 Mulch!! Mulching the garden is one of the best tips to help protect the soil, keep down weeds and it breaks down into extra nutrients. I like to use pine fines which have the added benefit of slightly raising the ph.

This week in the garden: April 24th 2023

It’s the fourth and last week of April in zone 6! May is almost here!

🍓 plant bare-root perennials! Strawberries, asparagus, rhubarb, fruit trees, shrubs, berry bushes and more! Bareroot plants are dormant and a light frost shouldn’t bother them 😊
👩‍🌾 get those vegetable beds in order! Planting time is fast approaching and veggies need a lot of nutrients to perform well. Compost, bloodmeal, crushed eggshells are all great additions!
❄️ keep an eye on the weather! Even though we’ve had a few really warm days, there is still frost on the forecast for the next couple of weeks. If you’re hardening off warm veggies like tomatoes, peppers and squash, be sure to bring them in during freezing weather and cover tender blooms if possible.

This week in the garden: April 17th 2023

It’s the third week of April in zone 6 and we’ve gotten a little reminder that winter isn’t quite done yet ❄️ Here’s what I’m working on this week!

🥦 plant cold-hardy seedlings! It’s finally time to start putting some of those indoor grown or wintersown seedlings out in the garden.
🦋clean up the garden beds. If you left your leaves and stems in the garden for overwintering pollinators, now is an okay time to start cleaning them up and getting them ready for the season.
🍉 start melon, cucumber, and squash seeds, either indoors or using the winter sowing method.

This week in the garden: April 10th 2023

It’s the second week of April in zone 6 and warming up fast! Here’s what I’m working on this week
🌿 divide perennials! Now is a great time to split up hostas, lillies, irises, black eyed Susan’s, daisies, and more! This will provide space in the bed and help refresh overcrowded plants!
🐟 fertilize! Now is a great time add some fish emulsion to your garlic, rhubarb, or perennials
🍅 we’re less than a month away from the final frost date here! Now is a good time to start hardening off tomatoes and other warm weather crops if you’ve been growing them indoors.
🌸 harvest spring blooms! There are tons of delicious flowers available now, dandelion, violet and magnolia just to name a few of my favorites! As always, be sure to use safe foraging practices when harvesting wild food.
