An area of showers with embedded thunderstorms will track east across the area early this morning. Isolated storms could produce up to a half inch of rain in under a half hour, along with dangerous cloud to ground lightning strikes. After the showers push southeast of the area this morning skies will be turning sunnier this afternoon. A stretch of dry and mild weather extends through this weekend. Windy and much warmer weather moves in early next week, which will bring elevated fire danger back to the region.

10/22/2024

Breezy winds from the south will gust to 25 to 30 mph this afternoon, with relative humidity dropping to around 30 percent, as very dry field conditions persist. This will result in elevated fire danger this afternoon, especially east of I-55. Although some spotty rainfall is possible in this area, coverage of rainfall is expected to be sparse east of I-55 and won’t mitigate fire danger for most areas. Open burning should be avoided as any fires could quickly become uncontrollable. Outdoor equipment such as farm machinery and chainsaws that generate heat and sparks could ignite fires.
A chance of showers will develop today, with the highest chances around 40 percent west of I-55 before noon, and chances of 15 to 30 percent east of I-55 after noon. Breezy south winds can be expected. Dry conditions will return Wednesday and Thursday, then additional chances of showers and thunderstorms are expected Thursday night and Friday. Through the week, most locations should see rainfall amounts under a quarter inch, although some spotty higher amounts are possible. Amounts are unlikely to significantly ease drought conditions. Highs will be in the mid to upper 70s today, followed by upper 60s to mid 70s Wednesday through Friday.
