Just like any other proclaimed music lover, I consume a lot of music. And just like any other music lover, some artists will remain in my favorites category for life. Enter DAVID SANBORN. I spent the most active years of my matriculation through elementary, middle, and high school playing Alto Saxophone. Though I don’t credit SANBORN for me wanting to play saxophone, I credit him for giving me a tone to aspire to….I just wanted to sound like DAVID. I changed mouthpieces, reeds, and my embouchure…you know…everything except PRACTICE enough to sound like Sanborn.
The name of the album is BACKSTREET.
Two things I remember most about that record, are all the names I was familiar with from other of my favorite albums like Marcus Miller, Luther Vandross, Tiwanna Agee, and Hiriam Bulluck. The other are the instruments that got so much shine as they were becoming staples, like the MOOG, DX-7, Oberheims, and Jupiter 8s. I miss liner notes.
Though I have an opinion on every tune, the one that sits with me is the cover of NEITHER ONE OF US…simply because when the bridge crescendos, David reaches a note that the cherubs sing when the face of God is present.
David Sanborn name rarely comes up in my circles as a bad ass sax man…but he will forever hold that title in my canon of Musicians, Instrumentalists and all-around Bad Ass Saxophone players.
