What a payday for unscrupulous entrepreneurs!

Authors warn that overestimating one’s own risk, combined with an embrace of ineffective preventive measures, could lead to a lot of wasted spending.

During non–rapid eye movement sleep, low-frequency oscillations in neural activity support memory consolidation and neuronal computation. Sleep is also associated with increased interstitial fluid volume and clearance of metabolic waste products. It is unknown why these processes co-occur and how ...

At the price of a $750 million, Allergan has avoided a trial over its effort to force patients onto a newer version of Namenda as the original neared the patent cliff. The drugmaker will pony up to settle allegations that it delayed cheap Namenda generics with its 'hard switch' plan, costing purchas...

I wonder how much they made before agreeing to this settlement?

Avanir Pharmaceuticals agreed to pay more than $95 million to resolve kickback allegations and charges of "false and misleading marketing" of dextromethorphan-quinidine (Nuedexta) to manage dementia behavior, an unapproved indication, the Justice Department announced.
Just one day later, Avanir reported its phase III trial of deudextromethorphan hydrobromide-quinidine sulfate -- a version of Nuedexta -- failed at treating agitation in Alzheimer's patients.

When you read the whole article the headline becomes "less true and less meaningful" in day to day detection or screening for Alzheimer's. This is another example of headline Truthiness rather then the whole truth.

Too much focus on cutting hospitalizations, not enough $$ for docs, critics say

Here’s a really, really excellent article on research on how to create empathy for older adults with disabilities. Everyone will probably love reading it except P.K. Beeville and the folks at the Virtual Dementia Tour. They’ll probably sue the hell out of this research department.

With greater longevity, the quest to avoid the infirmities of aging is more urgent than ever.

This could be a whole new ball game in research on Alzheimers. Researchers found differences in how genes worked in Myelination (the fatty coating on parts of brain cells) . Myelination is also screwed up in MS (multiple sclerosis) in a few research subjects at MIT. Here's a quote from the leader of the study.

" The team also compared differences in gene expression between early-stage and late-stage Alzheimer’s disease. They identified distinct changes in all the major cell types early in the disease process. Genetic signatures related to myelination were affected in most cell types, suggesting a key role in the disease.

“This study provides, in my view, the very first map for going after all of the molecular processes that are altered in Alzheimer’s disease in every single cell type that we can now reliably characterize,” Kellis says. “It opens up a completely new era for understanding Alzheimer’s.”
