Check out the trailer for IN HER SHOES!

A recipient of the Mental Health America National Media Award, this documentary powerfully captures the voices of incarcerated women as they confront severe mental health challenges, past trauma, and histories of sexual abuse through the transformative process of art therapy. Using shoes as a metaphor, these women reflect on their lives—where they’ve been, where they are, and where they hope to go.

The documentary humanizes the struggles of women in the carceral system, fostering empathy and understanding while highlighting their resilience. It raises urgent and essential questions about whether these women should be in jail or receiving the mental health care they desperately need.

We hope to partner with likeminded organizations to spark dialogue and reduce stigma around mental illness and incarceration, bringing much-needed attention to the need for mental health care and support for incarcerated women.

Contact us to host a screening by DM or at [email protected].

A huge shoutout to Conover Hunt and Lindalyn Adams for shaping the museum’s original vision and to Nicola Longford for carrying it forward with innovative ideas and engaging programs.
