A peek into the Lion's (Mane) den 🦁👨🌾🍄
A couple shots from this morning of the land where we host our workshops.
It brings me honor and excitement to be featured in the local newspaper, The Dahlonega Nugget.
"Local business owner Samuel Blackstone has a simple mission for Mindfull Mycology: eradicate fungiphobia."
A great way we do this is by offering workshops to teach people how to forage for mushrooms, find food & medicine in their backyard, and how to grow mushrooms at home for food & medicine without any need for fancy equipment.
Click the link in bio to sign up for our next workshop! We have two in August, Aug. 12 & Aug. 26. We hope to see you there!

One step closer...🚶♂️🦁🧬🍄
In December, I harvested this wild Lion’s Mane culture less than 5 miles from my home. It took a little finagling but once it popped off the tree (and rolled 50 yards down a forested hill), I was able to bring it home to my lab and clone it successfully. 🧬👨🔬
Once fall rolls around, I plan to grow these genetics out in an outdoor hoop house alongside a local Ganoderma tsugae (the “Hemlock Reishi”) culture I foraged and cloned from our backyard’s wooded 35+ acres last spring. 🔴🟠🟡
All this is in an effort to further align Mindfull Mycology with the long-term ethic of using locally grown or wild foraged genetics/mushrooms for almost all of our products. I say ‘almost’ because I can’t seem to forage enough Turkey Tail locally or grow enough Cordyceps on my own to fully meet demand. 🔥
That being said, all of our Lion’s Mane and Reishi extracts are made with mushrooms grown 100% in-house, all of our Turkey Tail extracts are from U.S. wild foraged mushrooms, and we’re currently experimenting with growing Cordyceps in bulk to get even closer to this vision. 🦃👁
Everything worthwhile takes time 🕑
In about one week, I’ll cross a major mushroom milestone: 100 liters of medicinal mushroom extract (Lion’s Mane, Reishi, Turkey Tail, Cordyceps, and a smattering of Artists Conk) produced for @mindfullmycology.
To celebrate, here are some recent shots of a Lion’s Mane grow – my favorite mushroom to extract – from my tried and true fruiting technique utilizing an old monotub, a thin layer of perlite, and a pump-action spray gun.
To me, the over technologization of mushroom growing is a misstep for a myriad of reasons. I’ll always be a proponent of the KISS rule: Keep It Simple, Stupid.
Or as they say down here in the south, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
