Midland Fire Deemed Accidental.

A fire on Friday in Midland was caused by a malfunctioning wood stove, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal. A house trailer on Quinn Street suffered $3,000 in damages from the fire that was discovered by one of the residents just before 6am Friday. The Midland Fire Company No. 1 took 20 minutes to bring the fire under control. The residents are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

WV Names New Secretary of Health.

Dr. Arvin Singh will now lead the WV Department of Health, bringing with him a background in healthcare leadership, strategy, and operations. Dr. Singh holds multiple advanced degrees, including a Master of Public Health from George Washington University, a Master of Business Administration from Penn State University, a Master in Science in Healthcare Leadership from Brown University, and a Doctorate in Education from Nebraska Methodist College, with a focus on healthcare leadership.

Van Hollen, Raskin Reintroduce Permit-To-Purchase Gun Safety Bill.

Maryland U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen and Congressman Jamie Raskin have reintroduced their Handgun Permit To Purchase Act. The legislation would expand adoption of state and local gun safety laws. The bill creates an incentive for states to implement laws that require individuals to obtain a license before purchasing a handgun. The introduction comes after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a challenge to Maryland’s 2013 Handgun Qualification Licensing Law.

Linda Widmyer to Take Office Monday.

Linda Widmyer will be sworn in Monday as the new member of the Allegany County Board of Education. Widmyer was approved by a 2-1 vote by the county commissioners Thursday. The swearing in will be at 10 a.m. at the Washington Street office of the school board.

Catholic Schools Week Begins Sunday.

Catholic Schools Week is being celebrated nationwide with the theme “United in Faith and Community.” Bishop Walsh principal Jen Flinn says that this week kicks off with parish Masses over the weekend where BW students will give presentations. Other activities include Bring a Friend Day, Catholic Schools Week Mass, Prayer Buddies, and a White Out basketball game Monday night.

Habitat For Humanity Accepting Applications.

Allegany County Habitat For Humanity is planning a new home to be built on Maple Street in Cumberland this year. Applications for homeownership are being accepted. Applicants must show a need for housing, meet income guidelines, be able to pay an affordable mortgage and be willing to provide volunteer hours on the project. Information sessions are scheduled for this Saturday at the South Cumberland Library at 1pm and at the LaVale Library on February 8 at 11am.

City Supports Railway Safety Act.

The City of Cumberland has come out in support of the Maryland Railway Safety Act. Local CSX conductor Randy Martz requested the City to support the Act at a December meeting, and the Mayor and City Council passed a resolution of support Tuesday. With derailments that have taken place in the past year including hazardous materials, the Act would enforce safety measures for railways in the state, according to the resolution read by City Clerk Allyson Layton...

“There have been over 2,000 rail crossing accidents per year over the last decade causing 8,494 injuries and 2,503 deaths. The Maryland Railway Safety Act would address many of these unsafe conditions existing in the railroad industry today and is vital to ensuring safe train operations.”

Linda Widmyer Appointed to Fill Allegany County Board of Education Seat.

After receiving and reviewing 11 applications for the vacant seat on the Allegany County Board of Education, the Allegany County Commissioners appointed Linda Widmyer. Widmyer will complete the remainder of the late Bob Farrell’s term. Commissioner President David Caporale thanked everyone who applied and for their desire to fill the role…

Federal Funding Improve Grantsville’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Over $11 million dollars in federal funding is going toward upgrading the Town of Grantsville’s wastewater treatment plant. The investment is comprised of nearly $10 million dollars in grant money and over $1 million in loans. Funding will help the plant meet current and future permit standards set by the Maryland Department of the Environment, and will connect to 590 homes in Grantsville and the neighboring communities of Jennings, Chestnut Ridge, and the Goodwill Retirement Community in Garrett County.

Bigger Developers Show Interest in Memorial Hospital Site.

With the proposal deadline of February 14th, the City of Cumberland is seeing new interest in the Memorial Hospital site from a number of housing developers. Mayor Ray Morriss told WCBC there has been interest from larger building companies...

“D.R. Horton who is doing the Allegany High School site has shown an interest. The Dan Ryan Homes they were actually at PACE, and we had a discussion with them about the RFP. They’re showing an interest. So we’re getting an interest from really some of the bigger developers.”

Budget Includes Two Highway Projects Of Note

The budget that Governor Wes Moore has rolled out for fiscal year 2026 includes two important transportation projects in Western Maryland. Moore was in Frederick to announce funding planned for a heavily-traveled stretch of Route 15 that has had over 570 crashes in the last three years…

“This $160 million dollar project will add a third lane in each direction to improve safety and increase capacity. It’s going to make Maryland safer and it’s going to make Maryland more competitive.”

In addition, funding to widen Interstate 81 in Hagerstown has also been restored to the budget, another important commerce pathway…

“Through these investments, we will both meet the public safety mission and also ensure that our economy is growing and thriving in this region and also beyond.”

Superintendent Pleased With System Response to COVID Era.

Retiring Superintendent Jeff Blank spoke recently with WCBC about his career in the Allegany County School system. He has been in the county schools for 37 of his 38-years in education. He said that he was very pleased with how the school system responded when COVID-19 brought a new kind of education for teachers and students…

“A lot of high points and a lot of real challenging moments that ultimately when we got through it, it was rewarding. Knowing how we got through it compared to the country – I’m proud of those things.”

Slower Blueprint Rollout Worries Advocates.

Governor Wes Moore’s Excellence in Maryland Public Schools Act has some Education Blueprint supporters cautious about the future. Moore is proposing cuts to per pupil spending, collaborative time plans, and freezing other increases in coming fiscal years. Delegate Ben Barnes who chairs the House Appropriations Committee says any proposed cuts will have a hard time coming out of the House. Maryland Schools Superintendent Dr. Carey Wright says the board is 100% on the Blueprint but slowing the rollout of collaborative time makes sense in order to deal with the state teacher shortage.

Comptroller Highlights Earned Income Tax Credit.

Residents in many of rural Maryland’s counties have left hundreds of thousands of dollars on the table when they file their income taxes each year. That’s the finding of State Comptroller Brooke Lierman and she would like to see that change. Her office is encouraging eligible Marylanders to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit that can either reduce or eliminate the amount of tax owed….

“A refundable tax credit which means you get money back, even if you don’t owe. In 2023, the average earned income tax credit in Maryland was a little over $1,000 but unfortunately, over 181,000 Marylanders didn’t claim it.”

Dr. Darlene Brannigan-Smith Named Interim President At FSU.

The University System of Maryland Chancellor, Jay Perman, announced on Wednesday afternoon that Dr. Darlene Brannigan-Smith would fill the role as Interim President for Frostburg State University. Current President Ron Nowaczyk will leave his position at the end of the month. Dr. Smith has worked at the University of Baltimore in roles including executive vice president and provost. Smith takes over the role on March 10. Perman shared that the University System plans a national search for a permanent leader.
